The 2011 Gyeonggi World Ceramic Biennale, which is being held until November 22at Icheon, Yeoju and Gwangju, is fast becoming one of the hot spots for weekend family outings because of its entertaining programs and diverse range of events.

The most popular programs of this year’s Biennale are Play with Clay, Wood-Fired Kiln Camp, and Mini Concert.

Play with Clay takes place every weekend at Icheon Cerapia, the Gwangju Gonjiam Ceramic Park, and Yeoju Doja Sesang, and consists of two competitions: Who can build the highest with clay, and Who can throw clay the farthest.

Who can build the highest with clay, is a team game in which each team has to try build the highest structure with clay within 20 minutes. The winning family will receive approximately KRW 500,000, and the final competition will be held on October 23rd in Yeoju.

In the Who can throw clay farthest competition, the participant who can throw a 10kg lump of clay farthest is the winner. There is no entry fee and everyone participant will receive a participation prize.

For families who love to camp, Icheon Cerapia is holding the Wood-Fired Kiln Camp. The camping spot is located right next to a wood-fired kiln, where families can enjoy making pottery. This event presents a great opportunity to learn how to make pottery using a potter’s wheel.

There has been a flood of reservation requests for this camp since the Biennale’s opening day, so the camp will be operated regularly even after the end of the Biennale.

Throughout October, the CeraMix Creativity Center of Icheon Cerapia will hold a special lecture of the CeraMIX creation school entitled Relay Imaginations in the Joy of Clay class held on the first floor. The lecture will be held on Saturdays from 1pm to 3pm, and will feature a learning experience designed to enable children to develop their dreams.

On October 22, the third Relay Imaginations lecture features Professor Jo Yun-gyeong from Ewha Women’s University. She will give a presentation on A Remote Control of My Life – Finding Creativity in Everyday Life. Also, the imagination director Kang U-hyeon, Chairman of the Korea Ceramic Foundation, will give a lecture on Ridiculous Ways to Be Imaginative on October 29.

The Mini Concert, called Cerafesta, will be held in Bandal Park of Icheon Cerapia every weekend and features many popular singers. This week the concert features Dongmulwon, Jajeongeo Tan Punggyeong, Yi Ye-rin, and Emerald Castle.

The 2011 Gyeonggi World Ceramic Biennale, hosted by the Gyeonggi Provincial Government and supervised by the Korea Ceramic Foundation, is being held as a local ceramic festival until November 22 at Icheon, Gwangju and Yeoju, although the Ceramic Biennale will continue for another month.

Several events and exhibitions including international competitions, the Sunday Morning Ceramics Exhibition, the Special Exhibition for Ceramics with Inlaid Design, the Korea-China Ceramic Arts Exchange Exhibition, and the CeraMIX Life Exhibition will run until the end of the Biennale, while other permanent programs such as the Joy of Clay class of Icheon Cerapia, the Printing Tripitaka Koreana Woodblocks program of Gwangju Gonjiam Ceramics Park, and the CereMIX Creation program of Yeoju Doja Sesang will be available on a regular basis.
