Hosted by Gyeonggi Province and directed by the Korea Ceramic Foundation, the 2011 World Ceramic Biennale Korea presents new programs in synch with late-autumn as it the season comes to an end.
The province and ceramic foundation started special late-autumn programs last month on October 29th in the cities of Yeoju, Icheon, and Gwangju where the Biennale is hosted.
The Grill n Grill Festival is hosted at Icheon Cerapia and Yeoju Doja Sesang to warm up the chilly autumn.
Various programs offer unique experiences to the participants. In Grill-Eat-Ceramics, participants can enjoy around 20 types of grilled food including grilled skewers, sweet potatoes, rice cakes, and chestnuts. They can also make their own ceramics and bring them home the same day with the Make Your Own Ceramics program.
People can do more than eat already-made food in the Grill-Eat-Ceramic program – they can even purchase ingredients and grill them on their own in the kiln.

In the Make Your Own Ceramics Program at Icheon Cerapia, participants can shape and make their own ceramics using Raku-firing technique with artists. Raku firing is a technique to quickly bake pottery in a small kiln after glazing the draft pottery with Raku enamel. Baking takes 2 hours, so participants can bring their creations back home on the same day.
Yeoju Doja Sesang dazzles the eyes of participants with their Outdoor Firing Program. Outdoor firing is an ancient technique in which pottery is baked outdoors in a bonfire rather than in a kiln. It is interesting to see how pottery is baked in real-time.
The ceramics exhibition takes autumn to the next level – it takes people to the diverse world of ceramics. Icheon Cerapia exhibits modern ceramics. Viewers can enjoy works by international contest winners, the Sunday Morning Ceramics exhibition from the European Ceramics Work Center, and the Matter and Creativity exhibition of Ateliers d’Art de France.
The city of traditional ceramics, Gwangju, presents the special Sanggam pottery exhibition Carving and Filling, and the Korea-China Ceramics Exchange exhibition to commemorate 20 years of Korea-China diplomatic relations in Gonjiam Ceramic Park. Yeoju Doja Sesang focuses on daily ceramics and hosts the Ceramics Life, Table Story, and Ceramic Fashion exhibitions.

Unique resting areas in each of the event halls also dazzle the eyes of visitors. There’s Gumiho (Nine-tail Lake) inside Icheon Cerapia, which is made from ceramics, Spain Sculpture Park with 158 works of Spanish sculptors installed inside Gonjiam Ceramic Park, and the Korean-style house corridor Doyerang in Yeoju Doja Sesang. Ceramic works around the event halls installed by regional artists are must-see items as well.
There are also various clay experience programs. Icheon CeraMIX Creation Center is managing the Ceramics Creation Workshop where people can see and experience glass-making and Clay Class where people can experience pottery.
The participation fee for the clay class is KRW 10,000 to 15,000, and KRW 5,000 to experience Sanggam Daejanggyeong of Gwangju Gonjiam Ceramic Park.
The 2011 Gyeonggi International CeraMIX Biennale is held until November 22nd in Icheon Cerapia, Gwangju Gonjiam Ceramic Park, and Yeoju Doja Sesang
