Gyeonggi Province’s wild ginseng makgeolli, featuring healthy nutrients and excellent taste, will soon become a large-scale export to Japan.

On December 15th, Gyeonggi Province announced that 306 tons of Sansam Gadeuk makgeolli, valued at USD 566,000, will be exported to Japan by November of 2012. The export quantity amounts to 408,000 750 mili liter bottles.

Woori San Sam Corp., the manufacturer of Sansam Gadeuk makgeolli, announced the signing of the export contract with Japan’s Alpha Corporation. On November 28th, the company shipped its first 20 tons, equal to 26,000 bottles of the makgeolli. On the December 16th, the company will make a second shipment of 25.5 tons, totaling 34,000 bottles.

Last March, Sansam Gadeuk makgeolli successfully entered the Southeast Asian market, in which makgeolli had been virtually unknown, and realized exports of 120 tons and valued at USD 220,000, to Indonesia.

Sansam Gadeuk was developed by the Gyeonggi-do Agricultural Research & Extension Services in 2009 and the technology was transferred to Woori San Sam Corp. for production. The makgeolli is produced from 100% Gyeonggi rice and Gwangju specialty wood-cultivated ginseng. Josuldang Inc. of Pocheon City produces the makgeolli using an OEM method.

This makgeolli won an award at the ‘Makgeolli Last Sixteen’ event hosted by the Ministry of Food, Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries for 560 traditional liquor breweries of Korea. In 2011, the product ranked number one in the Gyeonggi Province native liquor quality assessment contest in terms of both taste and functionality.

In particular, the patented technology of the Gyeonggi-do Agricultural Research & Extension Services extracts twice as much saponin from the wood-cultivated ginseng as the traditional method during the brewing process, thus leading to excellent mind-and-body stabilizing effects.

A component study by the Korea Analysis Research Institute reveals that one 750 mili liter bottle of Sansam Gadeuk contains 17,000mg of saponin.

Gyeonggi personnel explained, “The Japanese are very interested in maintaining their health after the nuclear power plant disaster. This functional makgeolli contains saponin that increases immunity and helps stabilize the mind and body, thus creating a high potential for sales success.”

Meanwhile, Gyeonggi Province is developing and distributing other diverse and functional makgeolli products that incorporate provincial agricultural specialty items including purple sweet potato makgeolli, barley makgeolli, eastern prickly pear makgeolli, and natural rice makgeolli.
