The ‘DMZ Bike Tour’ resumes after a winter hiatus.
The Northern Gyeonggi Provincial Office is holding the 2012 DMZ Bike Tour in the DMZ area, previously off limits to the general public for 60 years, at 2 PM, February 26, at the Imjingak Pavilion in Paju City.
The bike tour begins at the Imjingak Pavilion and runs along the 18km-long military patrol route near the Imjingang River (there is a 14km route for beginners) via the Reunification Bridge, Gunnae Crossroads and Chopyeong Island. This tour is very special as it enables participants to ride alongside the historic site while enjoying the area’s exceptionally well preserved ecosystem.
Those interested should apply online either at Gyeonggi DMZ (dmz.gg.go.kr) or the Gyeonggi Tourism Organization (www.ethankyou.co.kr)by February 17. The entry fee is KRW 10,000 per person. Bikes and helmets can be rented, and a Paju specialty is offered as a souvenir gift.
Choe Hyeong-geun, head of the Strategic Planning Division at the Northern Gyeonggi Provincial Office, said, “This is the third year for the bike tour, which runs along the military patrol route. Participants can enjoy the pristine beauty of the natural environment while viewing this historic national security site. We will improve the required convenience facilities and expand the program to ensure a more unique bike experience.”
The DMZ bike tour began in February 2010, and a total of 3,200 bike riders have participated in the past 18 rides. The rides are not held in winter. As usual, the 2012 bike ride will take place on the fourth Sunday of the month.
