Gyeonggi Province announces the 1st phase of its technology development projects for 2012 with support of KRW 7.4 billion

◇ Gyeonggi Province will invest KRW 7.4 billion in the 2012 1st Gyeonggi Province technology development projects to support technology development by small businesses.

Gyeonggi Province and the Gyeonggi Institute of Science and Technology Promotion support technology development by those small and medium sized business in the province that possess outstanding technologies but suffer from financial deficiencies.

The province announced on March 4 that it would implement the 2012 1st Gyeonggi Province Technology Development Projects with support of KRW 7.4 billion.

This is small business support program is characteristic of those that Gyeonggi Province focuses on to boost the competitiveness of companies in the province through technological cooperation among industries, universities and research institutions. The province has provided KRW 68 billion for 284 programs since 2008.

The province anticipates that visible returns will be realized within three years of the completion of technology development through increased sales of KRW 830 billion and the additional hiring of more than 4,400 people. 

In addition to the 17 major industries of the Industry Innovation Cluster Committee (IICC) for which the province has provided support, Gyeonggi Province has added to the list software industries, new start-ups, companies based in the northern part of Gyeonggi Province and companies engaged in commercialization of technologies recognized in technology contests.

In the area of IICC, the province provides a total of KRW 5 billion for 25 projects, with KRW 200 million for each project, to a consortium of more than two companies. The province provides a total of KRW 300 million for research and development to companies that are less than four years old for one of three designated projects.

In the areas of service, manufacture and software, a total of KRW 500 million will be provided annually to companies engaged in five designated areas with KRW 100 million for each area. For the development of R&D in the northern part of Gyeonggi Province, the province offers local companies in Goyang and other localities a total of KRW 1 billion for ten projects, with KRW 100 million for each.

The province has allocated a total of KRW 600 million to companies selected to promote the commercialization of new technologies recognized in the 2011 G-Smart Idea Contest.

For these technology development programs, electronic applications should be submitted by April 5 and mailed applications should be delivered by April 6. An evaluation committee comprised of experts in related fields will be formed for the selection of the support areas.

In the meantime, the province plansto hold the Comprehensive Briefing Session on Gyeonggi Corporate Support Programs at the Advanced Institute of Convergence Technology in Gwanggyo Techno Valley at 2 o’clock in the afternoon on April 9.

In the briefing session, institutions related to the support of companies will participate and explain their major projects for 2012; the institutions include the Gyeonggi Institute of Science and Technology Promotion, the Gyeonggi Technopark, the National Nanofab Center, the Gyeonggi Credit Guarantee Foundation and the Korea Technology Finance Corporation.

On April 15, the Comprehensive Briefing Session for Northern Gyeonggi will take place in Exhibition Hall One of KINTEX to provide business owners in the area with useful information. The session will be attended by the Goyang Industry Promotion Agency, the Northern Branch of GSBC, and the Korea High Tech Textile Research Institute.

Jeon Seong-tae, Assistant Governor for Economy & Investment, said, “A number of small and medium-sized businesses in the province are suffering from a shortage of R&D funds despite possessing of excellent technologies.” 

“By continuously supporting their R&D funds, the province will help these companies not only upgrade their technical levels but also secure and commercialize their intellectual property rights.”
