A cherry blossom event will take place this April at the Gyeonggi Provincial Government Complex.
Gyeonggi Province is holding the 2012 Cherry Blossom Event between April 20 and 22 on the grounds of its office complex.
Every year some 100,000 citizens visit the area around the provincial government office complex, which features such scenic sites as Paldal Mountain and Suwon Hwaseong Fortress, to see the cherry blossoms.
Considering current domestic economic challenges, the provincial government is staging this year’s event as a series of experiential and educational programs, rather than as a festival, so that members of the public can participate in the event with their families.
Gyeonggi Provinice will hold an exhibition of photos related to North Korea’s attacks on the ROKS Cheonan and Yeonpyeong Island to raise public awareness regarding the importance of national security. It will also offer various hands-on programs to improve public preparedness for potential disasters. Furthermore, it will operate a disability-experience hall designed to help the public better understand the challenges of physical disabilities and support the disabled on the upcoming Day of the Disabled.
In particular, for the first time in Korea, this year’s event will focus on bicycles designed specifically to meet the needs of various disabilities. The bicycles have been developed by the Gyeonggi-do Assistive Technology Research & Assistance Center to enable disabled individuals to use them for leisure, transportation, and rehabilitation training purposes.
On April 21, Gyeonggi Province will offer these bicycles as gifts to some fifty individuals, including thirty children and youngsters and twenty adults, and hold a parade with the provincial governor in attendance.◇ Every year some 100,000 citizens visit the area around the provincial government office complex, which features such scenic sites as Paldal Mountain and Suwon Hwaseong Fortress, to see the cherry blossoms. ⓒ G-News Plus◇ This year’s cherry blossom event will consist of diverse experiential and educational programs that enable members of the public to participate fully with their families. The province has organized various types of experiential and educational programs for visitors.
The events will include performances by cheerleaders, B-boy and R&B groups from participating universities, and military bands, as well as a screening of an international documentary about the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ). The province will also operate promotional booths to assist multicultural families and promote major provincial policies.
Each year sees the opening of the highly popular Cherry Blossom Path Sharing Market, where visitors can sample and purchase Gyeonggi Province’s speciality items at low prices. Children in particular love the market.
An official of Gyeonggi’s General Affairs Division said, “Many visitors come to this event, so we recommend they use public transportation to get here.” He added, “During the event, we plan to restrict vehicle access to the provincial office complex as well as traffic on both sides of the road, including the intersection at the rear gate of the complex and the right detour road to the adjacent intersection”.◇ During the event, visitors will be able to buy Gyeonggi Province’s speciality items (G-Mark) at low prices at the Cherry Blossom Path Sharing Market. ⓒ G-News Plus
