◇ On April 4, Gyeonggi Province announced the arrival of Geongang Japgok Gui Tteok (Healthy Diet Cake Made of Miscellaneous Cereals) on the market. It contains twice as much dietary fiber as an ordinary rice cake and has a 1.8 times higher inhibitory effect on the fat-metabolizing enzyme lipase.

The Gyeonggi-do Agricultural Research & Extension Services (GARES) reported on April 4 that Jeongnam Nonghyup had started selling Geongang Japgok Gui Tteok (Healthy Diet Cake Made of Miscellaneous Cereals), which is known to be a very effective slimming aid for dieters, with technology transferred from GARES.

This healthy cereal cake is said to feature twice as much dietary fiber as an ordinary rice cake (i.e. 9.6% v. 4.6%) as well as a much higher inhibitory effect on the fat-metabolizing enzyme lipase (i.e., 15.5% v. 8.6%, or 1.8 times higher), which means that it is more effective in limiting dietary fat absorption. Made using a patent held by GARES, the cereal cake contains ingredients that are rich in dietary fiber, such as barley, unmilled rice, and hulled Job’s tear, which are mixed with powdered rice, black beans, and other additives, including medicinal herbs.

Geongang Japgok Gui Tteok is produced by the Hwaseong Well-being Rice Cake Cluster Business Division of Jeongnam Nonghyup, which is located in Hwaseong City. The division is capable of producing 12 tons of cereal cakes each day.

Jeongnam Nonghyup is selling rice cakes under the brand name “Didilhyang,” and has also begun to sell cereal cakes at Nonghyup Hanaro Marts, Gyeonggi Cyber Marketplace, Didilhyang Homepage, and Home & Shopping.

Commenting on the cereal cake, a Jeongnam Nonghyup official said, “We introduced it at the Tokyo FOODEX, which was held for four days from March 6. Visitors to the event showed keen interest in the cakes due to their rich flavor, positive dietary effect, and long preservation period (in a freezer). We are sure that Korean consumers will also show a favorable response.”

The product should be kept in a freezer, and its rich flavor is best enjoyed when baked in a frying pan.
Price: KRW 6,000 for a 400g pack of five.

GARES Director General Im Jae-uk said, “We will continue to develop products made of rice produced in the province and enhance the added value of local specialties with a view to developing the local agriculture and food industry.”

As part of its ongoing efforts to persuade more young people to consume cereal and rice cakes without worrying about weight gain, the GARES developed a technology to inhibit the activity of the fat-metabolizing enzyme lipase, for which it was granted a patent in September 2011.
