“What is the name of the port in Hwaseong City, Gyeonggi Province, which will be the main venue for the fifth Korea International Boat Show this year?”

The open-air theater at Dankook University, Jukjeon, Yongin City, Gyeonggi Province, May 22. Yi Seung-chan (25), majoring in molecular biology at Dankook University, was the only candidate left in the Campus Quiz Competition staged by the Gyeonggi Provincial Government. He bows his head as if unable to think of the correct answer to the question.

The audience lamented his fate. Mr. Yi had made it through a consolation match and defeated 130 opponents to advance to the final.

Then, Kim Seong-ryeol, Gyeonggi Province Vice Governor for Political Affairs, gave him a hint: “The port used to be called Apsil.” As soon as he heard the hint, Mr. Lee answered ‘Jeongok Harbor’.

Upon answering the final question correctly, Mr. Yi became the quiz king of the 2012 Know Gyeonggi Province Campus Quiz Competition. He also received a smart TV as the top prize.

Mr. Yi said, “I am glad to be the quiz king and to have represented Dankook University well, just as I had hoped to do. While preparing for the competition, I learned a great deal about the history and policies of Gyeonggi Province, including its historical sites and the new Smart Hub project.”

Finally, Mr. Yi said, “It has been two years since I moved from Seoul to Gyeonggi Province, but I heard that people find it difficult to move into the Pangyo area because the land and property prices are prohibitively expensive. I hope the province stabilizes this situation as soon as possible.”

The quiz contest was designed to promote the history, culture, celebrities, tourism resources and major policies of Gyeonggi Province and to inspire civic devotion to the province.

Vice Governor Kim Seong-ryeol attended the competition that day in order to encourage university student applicants. He said, “Gyeonggi Province has many local governments and is rich with history, culture, resources and talented people. Instilled with a great sense of pride and ownership, we must all learn more about the province and promote it positively.”

The MC asked Vice Governor Kim if he would be confident enough to participate in this competition and compete with the students, to which he replied, “I could be the quiz king if I competed against the heads of organizations in Gyeonggi Province.”

A total of 130 students from 14 universities attended the Campus Quiz Competition this year. Laptops and other prizes were awarded to the six candidates who advanced to the final.

Lee Min-u (26), majoring in management at Dankook University, said, “Honestly, I had no idea Gyeonggi Province does so much. I hadn’t really thought about the policies, but this competition has given me the motivation I need to take an interest in those things.”

The competition was filmed for public broadcast as an OBS TV special. With the popular comedian Park Jun-hyeong acting as MC, ‘C-REAL’ and the cheerleading squad of Dankook University, there were many celebratory performances during the competition.

An official of Gyeonggi Province said, “When surveyed, most of the student applicants indicated that they knew more about Gyeonggi Province after participating in the competition.” He added, “This competition is a successful communication channel that enables students to become more aware of Gyeonggi Province and to participate in the formulation of provincial policies.”
