More and more foreign students from non-English-speaking countries are applying to a stay at the Paju Camp of the Gyeonggi English Village.

While the Gyeonggi English Village, Paju Camp, recently extended its services to include a two-week intensive program in expectation of attracting the same number of overseas students, some 100 Russian students visited the camp on June 4th. In addition, 260 Russian primary and middle school students will attend the Paju Camp’s intensive English immersion courses until July 14th.

Up until the end of 2009, only 15 Russian students had applied for the course. However, that number has increased to 260 over the last three years thanks to positive word-of-mouth promotion.

In addition to the Russian students, 25 Japanese primary school students are visiting Korea next month and will spend their whole summer vacation here. Departing from Osaka, the students are expected to stay in dormitories with Korean students of the same age, and together they will make foreign friends while practicing English conversation.

Gyeonggi English Village, Paju Camp, considers its impressive educational achievements to be the biggest reason for the increase in long-term course registration by foreign students.

The two-week or longer intensive programs are run in a safe and education-friendly environment. As the first English Village established in Korea, Paju Camp incorporates special educational methods in the programs offered. Through intensive exposure to the target language and active interaction with native English teachers, students naturally acquire English communication skills.

An official of the English Village said not only foreign students but also parents of Korean primary and middle school students are also extremely interested in the four-week vacation course at Paju Camp.

The official explained, “As participation by foreign students in the long-term courses continues, Paju Camp will become an even more effective English camp and develop a positive, word-of-mouth reputation regarding the availability of both English practice and cultural exchange with foreign students.”
