The monthly container volume at Pyeongtaek Port recorded surpassed 40,000 TEU (‘twenty-foot equivalent unit’) for three consecutive months.
According to Gyeonggi Pyeongtaek Port Corporation on June 21st, the volume of containers processed in May reached 46,106TEU, marking an increase of 3.7% compared to May of the previous year.
While maintaining a monthly volume in excess of 40,000 TEU, recording 45,518 TEU in March and 43,913 TEU in April, the cumulative volume between January and May was 200,593 TEU.
The container volume at the international dock of Pyeongtaek Port itself stood at 11,878 TEU. Accordingly, the construction of a new international port is deemed a priority.
Gyeonggi Pyeongtaek Port Corporation President Choi Hong-chul said, “In terms of containers, the processing of exports and imports from China is well balanced, so it seems we are headed in the right direction.” He also added, “The container volume of Pyeongtaek Harbor keeps increasing, and we need to create more capacity to keep up with the demand.”
He also added, “Container volume by car ferry accounts for most of the total volume.” He asserted, “We need to expand the current small harbor facilities to attract more container traffic and to meet the higher demand”.
Presently, the international dock of Pyeongtaek Harbor can accommodate two ships and four car ferries, so the inconvenience for passengers and sailors is increasing.
