Four projects including “A Day at Namhansanseong Fortress” have been selected as the Cultural Heritage Foundation’s “Saeng Saeng Cultural Heritage Project” and will be showcased in Gyeonggi Province (Gyeonggi Cultural Foundation), Goyang City, Namyangju City, and Yeoncheon-gun.
The “Saeng Saeng Cultural Heritage Project” was launched in 2008 with the collaborative efforts of local municipal governments and private groups. Its main goals were to help residents familiarize themselves with local historic sites and to stimulate tourism and thereby boost the local economy. Last year the project took place in Gyeonggi Province (Gyeonggi Cultural Foundation, Gyeonggi Tourism Organization), Goyang City, Gunpo City. Goyang City’s “A journey to find the lost Bukhansanseong Fortress” program was recognized as a model project.
Previous model projects, namely, Gyeonggi Province’s “A Day at Namhansanseong Fortress” and Yeoncheon-gun’s “Meeting Goryeo, the Kingdom of Emperors at Sunguijeon Shrine” will continue along with two new additions in 2013. They are Goyang City’s “Traditional Thatched-Roof Home in the City” and Namyangju City’s “World Heritage Hongyureung Tomb.”
“A Day at Temporary Palace, Namhansanseong Fortress” has been selected as a model project for three consecutive years. The Namhansanseong Cultural & Tourism Initiatives, the organizer of the tour, has developed more programs based on the first program’s success, including “The King’s Healing Meditation,” “A Day at Temporary Palace with the King’s Doctor,” “The Combat Between Cheokhwapa and Juhwapa (Antipeace Fraction vs. Peace Faction),” “Sanseongi, Temporary Palace’s Daejanggeum,” and “Warriors who Protect Namhansanseong Fortress.”◇ A tourist takes a break in front of the East Gate of Namhansanseong Fortress. ⓒ G-News Plus / Park Gwan-sik
Goyang City held a talent donation program and tourist entertainments such as “Traditional Thatched-Roof Home in the City” and “Giving Life to the Traditional Thatched-Roof Home,” “Finding Stars and Sharing Fairy Tales in the Traditional Thatched-Roof Home,” and “Making Your Own Traditional Thatched-Roof Home in the City.”
Namyangju City’s “World Heritage Hongyureung Tomb” involves a reenactment of Empress Myeongseong’s state funeral ceremony, while Yeoncheon-gun’s “Meet Goryeo, the Kingdom of Emperors at Sunguijeon Shrine” features reenactments of regulating ritual (called jerye) and Korea’s first state examination.
A local official said, “So far, we have carried out four projects and fourteen sub-programs funded by the local and central governments, requiring a budget of KRW 160 million and the time and effort of some 11,200 people. This year the budget will be KRW 200 million for four projects and fifteen sub-programs. We will develop more interesting programs to enable citizens and visitors alike to enjoy Gyeonggi Province’s unique attractions.
