The new Gallery Byeol (Star) opened in the lobby of the Gyeonggi Province Government’s third annex building will display works of art made with recycled goods and donated by the district’s civil servants.

As part of the “4G General Administration at Your Doorstep” project, the municipal government refurbished the lobby of the 3rd annex building and celebrated its reopening this 15th, attended by some fifty participants including Vice GovernorⅠfor Political Affairs Kim Seong-ryeol and the staff responsible for the refurbishment work.

The lobby was originally home to a model map, which made it unsuitable for any use other than a lounge.

Gyeonggi Province’s civil servants worked together to transform the lobby into a space for relaxation and communication. They removed the large model map, and used various recycled materials to make tables and chairs. The staff also donated their talents in planning, designing, lighting, and making furniture. Pictures and books were also donated for the new lobby. The whole process was carried out on a volunteer basis, so no extra costs were involved.

The new lobby may not be sophisticated or fancy, but it was all ‘handmade’ by government staff. The new Gallery Byeol will serve as a lounge and playroom for young children. The lounge will be used to display artworks made by the staff and their family members, stage concerts, and accommodate sales among other interesting events to be held there in the near future.2.jpg Images◇ Vice GovernorⅠfor Political Affairs Kim Seong-ryeol giving his speech. ⓒ G-News Plus Yu Je-hun

During his speech, Vice GovernorⅠfor Political Affairs Kim said, “Interest in small things can form the basis of great success. There is nothing special about integrated, creative administration. Showing interest means acknowledging small things. Creativity can be achieved by practice. Focus is vital in smooth administration. I am glad the refurbishment project went well. Everyone did a fine job. I would like to thank the staff who participated in the project.”

The ceremony was accompanied by the opening of the gallery’s first exhibition. Action Officer Lee Yeong-jin donated seven paintings for the event. The exhibition will run until March 14, 2013.

Action Officer Lee, who currently works at the IOM-immigration Policy Research Center, has participated in various exhibitions since 2010. She opened her first solo exhibition in Insa-dong last year, and won a prize at the 22nd Public Servant Art Contest, hosted by the Ministry of Public Administration and Security.

Lee said, “I am glad to be part of such a wonderful talent donation event. I hope the gallery will be useful to many more people in the future.”3.jpg Images◇ Vice GovernorⅠfor Political Affairs Kim listens to Action Officer Lee’s explanation. ⓒ G-News Plus Yu Je-hun4.jpg Images◇The lobby of the third annex building has been reborn as a public domain thanks to the hard work of the staff.
