Gyeonggi Institute of Health and Environment recently developed, installed and is operating the model systems of ‘Air pollution signal light’ for the first time among the nation, enjoying the public attention

The model signal lights developed early this year by researchers, and installed and operated at the entrance of the mountain pass of Gwanggyo Mountain in Suwon City, display a risk of air pollution with 6 colors per air pollutant level.

While the conventional electronic board and others provide the pollutant levels in numbers, requiring specialized knowledge for understanding, this system gives colors per the pollutant level so that ordinary people can easily understand the level of air pollution.

The each color of the signal lights represent Good(blue), Normal(green), Caution(yellow), Bad(orange), Very bad(red), and Warning(brown) by receiving air pollutant levels in real time from 70 different measuring stations installed within the province.

The system is expected to help children and senior citizens to refrain from outdoor activities when necessary by informing them of the pollutant levels at a glance, thereby significantly contributing to protecting health of the residents.

Researchers of Gyeonggi Institute of Health and Environment are planning to spread the air pollution signal lights into cities and counties within the province.

One source from the institute said, “We need wisdom of living such as refraining from outdoor exercises according to the level of air pollution.” He also added, “If this system is installed in the parks and trails, or near the kindergartens and schools, it will help protecting health of the residents.
