Gyeonggi Agricultural Research & Extension Services held a rose show for self-developed new varieties and breeding lines at the rose breeding greenhouse on April 10.

At the show, about 50 participants including rose seed suppliers, cut flower auctioneers, Gyeonggi Exporting Flower Research Association, Flower Gyeonggi, Rose planting farms, florists, and rose breeding farms evaluated the new roses.

Among new varieties which have been developed recently, ‘Feel Lip’, named ‘Deep Purple’ in abroad, is popular in South America(Ecuador and Columbia) in that 700,000 rose trees have been sold as of now.

In 2012 Expo Flora Russia held in Moscow, Russia, it was awarded Platinum, proving the excellence of domestic rose varieties in abroad. Deep Purple is two-toned with deep pink at the edge of pink petals, and no thorns at the stem, and the yield of cut flowers is 15% more than general roses.

‘Ice Bear’, a white rose variety having very big flowers and thick stems, is highly marketable as it takes top 10% among about 100 species traded in the flower market.

Among varieties developed last year, ‘Summer Red’, a red rose having very large flowers and good quality in summer, and ‘Shall We Dance’, a red rose having high yields, are catching high attention from rose farms and consumers, resulting in an increase in cultivating such varieties.

At the show, a yellow rose with strongscent GR10-164, large and pink GR07-53, and large and white GR09-53 for wedding ceremony and magic purposes gained high attention among the newly unveiled varieties. In particular, GR07-28, a pest-resistant red variety having high yields, is expected to be sold in overseas market (Africa) as well as in the domestic market.

Superior roses selected among 130 lines this day will be registered as formal varieties by the end of this year and supplied to those who want to cultivate them from next year.

Meanwhile, Gyeonggi Agricultural Research & Extension Services has developed and supplied 41 rose varieties to domestic farms, reducing a royalty of KRW 1.5 billion, and received royalties by selling 1.2 million trees so far.

Head of the institute, Lim Jae-wook said, “We will constantly develop quality rose varieties which are easy to grow in the worldwide rose farms and have superior qualities in order to lead the world’s rose market.”
