‘Multicultural Family Supporters of Gyeonggi Province’, launched in January this year, play an important role as mentors in supporting multicultural families in Korea.

Gyeonggi Province announced on May 8 that it supported 217 families for 4 months after the launch.

Multicultural Family Supporters, with 517 supporters in activity now, is the system in which the experienced marriage immigrants support latecomers who have difficulty in settling down in Korea.

Milpinmimi (in Suwon and from Congo), one of the supporters, connected ‘A’ (a marriage immigrant from Vietnam living in Suwon City) to Multicultural Family Support Center of Suwon City.

‘A’ lives with her husband, 2 children, and sister. ‘A’ has been under stress due to her husband suffering from liver cirrhosis, the first son with physical disability and inarticulate in his speech, and her sister suffering from spondylolysis, and when recently diagnosed with hepatitis B, she had extreme thoughts.

Multicultural Family Support Center of Suwon City recently supports speech therapy for A’s son and treatment of her sister, and applied for emergency supports for limitless care of her husband.

A marriage immigrant B from the Philippines and living in Icheon City was recently notified to move out by the land owner from where she, her husband and 3 children built house and live without permission of the owner.

B, who had to care for her children even though her husband did not give her living allowances and there is no place for living, was supported by one of the supporters Carolira from the Philippines and Multicultural Family Support Center of Icheon City, resolving the tenancy deposit issue.

Supported by Multicultural Family Support Center of Icheon City, B is now using the local day care center, and was hired in a bread packing company through Women Saeil Center (New Job Center for Women) and maintains a stable life.

Meanwhile, Gyeonggi Province recently employed 3 additional marriage immigrants and expands the activities of the supporters to further support the activities for multicultural families.

One official from Multicultural Family Department of Gyeonggi Province said, “Through field activities by Multicultural Family Supporters, we are dealing with the support for multicultural families in dead zone.” He also said, “From this second half, we will strengthen the activities of Multicultural Family Supporters by analyzing the first half of the year.”
