Do you remember Suwon Worldcup Stadium on June 2 last year?

Unknown 1. “June 2? Was it the day of Soccer game of the national team?”

Unknown 2. “No. Perhaps K-League rivalry!”

Unknown 3. “If not, K-POP concert?”

Ah! As you may predict, all of them are wrong!

Do you remember? If you see the picture below, some of you will say, “I’ve got it!”

It was the day that whopping 45,000 people became one and raised their voices together.

Yes.

At 7 p.m. on June 2 in 2012,  such a spectacular scene was presented in Suwon Worldcup Stadium.

Numerous people passionately sang Korean traditional folk song Arirang in one voice. It was a historical moment when Suwon, and Korea was shaking.

Gyeonggi Province and Gyeonggi Arts Center will hold the 3rd Cheonjijindong Festival at Pyeonghwanuri, Imjingak, Paju at 6:30 p.m. on July 27. The slogan of this festival is “Peace Echoing in Korea, Peace Opening in Korea.”

This festival was designed to convey the echoes of peace through Korean traditional music, Samul, in commemoration of the 60th year of Korean War Armistice. The festival day marked Korean Armistice Day as well. Prof. Kim Deok-su in Korea National University of Arts serve as a general director called peace director in the 3rd festival as Peace following the two previous festivals.

I am excited about what impressions this festival will present.

The 2nd Cheonjijindong Festival was magnificent and powerful. Now, another history is about to start.

The 1st Cheonjijindong Festival in 2011 wished for the success of National Athlete Contest and challenged the Guinness Book of Records with 2011 Samulnori players. The 2nd festival in 2012 proclaimed the will of the whole nation for a  UNESCO designation for Arirang.

The theme of the 3rd Cheonjijindong Festival 2013 is Peace.

Meanwhile, there was a very special event in Gyeonggi English Village Paju Camp on July 8.

During the event, Governor Kim  and 140-odd children enjoyed playing with paints together. It was not a simple paint-playing with hands. They applied harmless paints on their whole bodies and freely ran on an extra-large canvas, measuring 15m by 20m.

The title of the event was a public arts project, “i-dream,” meaning ‘peace drawn by children’ in Korean.

The fact that 20 of the children were those of families from US Armed Forces in Korea (USFK) makes the event more meaningful. They went here and there on the canvas like a fish in water. Aren’t they cute?

Only with paints, they created something out of nothing very passionately. It must be a waste of time to explain every detail in writing, so I’ll show you pictures at the event.

Ah! My good old days! I think the children themselves retain peace.

No one can say their fathers will not be soldiers. Just as the soldiers in Korean reality show, True Men, some of them disguised themselves in full.

The three kids enjoyed paint-playing more than anyone else.

There was a familiar face at one side. He was actor Lee Gwang-ki. He hosted the event and enjoyed the time with children on that day

The children’s traces on the canvas became a very special artwork. They just applied different color paints freely on the canvas. How can they make it a special artwork?

The secret is in stencil technique.

Stencil means drawing and cutting certain patterns on the paper and applying paints to the holes to express what they want. You probably have experienced this at least once in art class.

At the event, two large canvases were piled up and the shape of the Korean peninsula was cut out from the upper canvas for children’s playing. Accordingly, when the upper canvas is removed, a large picture of the Korean peninsula appears. The wonderful artwork will be unveiled at the third Cheonjijindong Festival on July 27.

Meanwhile, the whole process of the first pre-event of the 3rd Cheonjijindong Festival was recorded in numerous cameras, catching eyes.

The host of the event reportedly plans to use the video clips as promotional material for the festival. I expect another wonderful promotion will be created.

Governor Kimo, who participated in this event, said in an interview, “Peace means getting along with others without fighting. Children tend to easily make up with others even after fighting. Doing like children is peace.”

As he said, I hope the North and the South will build a peace era as early as possible by modeling the mind of children.

Meanwhile, the grand artwork created as the symbol of peace on the day will be unveiled on the very day of the festival on July 27 with the largest picture in the world. Besides, visitors will be able to watch various performances, so why don’t you spare time to visit?

The festival will be held at 6:30 p.m. on July 27  in Pyeonghwanuri Park of Imjingak, Paju City.
