Governor Kim attended the event unofficially and showed special interest in the transformation of the new Korean tourism culture as he looked around the booths of eleven local governments along with Kang Woo-hyun, representative of imaginary United Nations of Imagination (UNi); Lee Jin-soo, director of Gyeonggi’s Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau ; Lee Wan-seop, mayor of Seosan; Han Dong-soo, governor of Cheongsong; and Jeong Sang-gyun, deputy governor of Yeoju.

Governor Kim made a passport to visit UNi at the immigration checkpoint and looked around twelve UNi events, Imagination Image pavilion, Nature Zone, Imagination Stage, Creative Experience Zone, Public Imagination Special pavilion, Imagination School, Fairy Tale Gallery, and Miniature Nations Exhibition, enjoying a great deal of conversations with event staff as well as other visitors.

The Korea Imagination Expo is a united tourism exhibition and festival of provincial cities held from August 7 through 11. Under the theme of “Imagination is the Way to Live, Creation is the Way to Go,” Twelve UNi brands and public imaginations gathered together to declare the beginning of image tourism. The twelve brands are Gwangjin and Gangnam-gu, Seoul; Seo-gu, Incheon; Yeoju-si, Gapyeong-gun, and Yangpyeong-gun, Gyeonggi; Yanggu-gun and Chuncheon Nami Island, Gangwon; Chungju-si, Chungbuk; Seosan-si, Chungnam; Jindo-gun, Jeonnam; and Cheongsong-gun, Gyeongbuk.

The United Nations of Imagination was a united alliance (UNi-Republics)  which uses the images of eleven local governments and Nami Island and explored a new direction in the era of creative tourism. Unlike previous exhibitions, this exhibition offered a participatory event of human-centered exhibition under the theme of “empty (space), fly (proclamation), and fill (people)” which indicates that all visitors are VIPs.

Governor Kim looked around the twelve Imagination Republics as he listened to Kang’s explanation, taking promotional leaflets for each nation and recording the details to understand tourism culture strategies of local governments other than Gyeonggi Province.

“The motto of cultural Saemaeul Movement (new community movement) which uses characteristics of each community as an opportunity for development and leap itself is unique. Images integrating designs with Korean traditions and lifestyles, objet exhibitions, and many others differentiate this from other events. I hope the twelve Imagination Republics develop further in the future,” said Governor Kim.

As Kang commented, “Imagination and reality coexist only if you examine nature as it is. We also need a change in the perspective on little tourism resources,”  Governor Kim replied, “If Gyeonggi Province integrate with new creative tourism in which creation meets imagination, it would like to attract more visitors.”

As he closely examined specialties of Yeoju, Gapyeong, and Yangpyeong Imagination Republics of Gyeonggi Province, Governor Kim also paid attention to product sales, asking, “We must enhance market quality. Is there anywhere else that sells these products aside from here?”

“The idea of creating new jobs for the socially disadvantaged such as senior citizens and women who are likely to be neglected in terms of livelihood and activities is a great idea,” said Governor Kim as he visited the permanent flea market. He had a commemorative photograph taken and talked with the elders who are earning money for personal spending by collecting waste articles.

“Korea Imagination Expo will also demonstrate a tour line that connects the twelve regions along with joint marketing among the Imagination Republics. Development of imagination brands that links cities and rural areas as well as joint marketing of local specialties will be the starting point of tourist trade that eventually connects to the whole world,” said Cheongsong governor Han, head of the EXPO Organization Committee and chairman of UNi.

After the Korea Imagination Expo, twelve Imagination Republics recycled 70 % of installations of the exhibition, practicing the consistent message of sustainability as an environmentally-friendly exhibition.
