The 2013 Gyeonggi Cactus Festival takes place in the Hwajeong Station Plaza of Deogyang-gu, Goyang for seven days from August 30 to September 5.

Hosted by the Gyeongggi-do Agricultural Research & Extension Services (GARES), the Gyeonggi Cactus Festival celebrates its 10th anniversary this year as an event held to promote industrial development of cacti by promoting the superiority to the residents and expanding domestic and overseas markets.

Under the theme of Diversity and Harmony of Cacti, this festival shows thematic landscaping displays of rooftop, balcony, walls and trails using cacti and succulents. Various research accomplishments will be exhibited as well, such as new varieties, complete new products, planting products, and dyeing products.

In particular, a large cacti garden that can be seen only in the desert as well as 100 exotic and rare cacti and succulents will be presented to the public. In addition, there will be an exhibit of exported cacti and an exhibit of contest entries. Various experience programs will be provided as well, such as making cacti pots, cacti soap, pressing flowers, and ceramic paintings.

The visiting hours are from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., and producers’ market will also be provided during the event so that consumers can purchase products at an affordable price.

“Gyeonggi Province is a chief producing district of cacti, which takes about 80 % of the national production,” said Lim Jae-wook, director general of the GARES, adding, “Cacti worth USD three million are exported every year to over 30 countries including the Netherlands and the U.S.. I hope many people participate in this festival to enjoy the opportunity of seeing and experiencing everything about the world’s No. 1 crop, Gyeonggi cacti.”
