Gyeonggi Province will hold a speaking contest for children of multicultural families and national marriage-based immigrants in celebration of the Hangul Proclamation Day on October 9. Applications will be received until September 13.
Intended to promote happy multicultural families by enhancing understanding and communication among family members, this contest consists of the Korean Speaking Contest for marriage-based immigrants and the Bilingual Speaking Contest for children of multicultural families.
Participants can freely choose the topic, and the qualifications are children of multicultural families and marriage-based immigrants who entered Korea after January 1, 2008. The Korean Speaking Contest is held for three minutes, and the Bilingual Speaking Contest for two minutes of Korean and two minutes of the parents’ native language.
The preliminaries will be held at the Gyeonggi Campus of Gyeongin National University of Education, with the Korean Speaking Contest on September 26 and the Bilingual Speaking Contest on the 28. Long-distance residents can participate through video.
Twenty excellent presenters selected from the preliminaries (10 for each sector) are given the qualification to participate in the finals. The winners of each contest are given certificates and cash prize: 1 grand prize winner (KRW 1 million), 1 excellence award winner (KRW 700 thousand), 3 participation award winners (KRW 500 thousand), and 5 runner-ups (KRW 300 thousand).
Last year, the grand prize winner of the Korean sector was Cruz Christine Ahn from Gangbuk, Seoul, with the title The Impression of the London Olympics, and the winner of the bilingual sector was Lee Jong-hyuk from Pocheon with the title The Allied Powers of Our Family.
“This contest is intended to promote happy multicultural families by enhancing understanding and communication among multicultural family members,” said Park Chung-ho, head of the Division of Multicultural Family in Gyeonggi Province. “Gyeonggi Province will take the initiative in settling a stable multicultural society.”
