Gyeonggi Technopark (hereafter Gyeonggi TP) that has led the technological innovation of SMEs in Gyeonggi Province held the 15th Anniversary and Vision 2020+ Proclamation Ceremony.
Held on September 12 at Gyeonggi TP Multipurpose Hall in Ansan, this event was attended by over 200 participants including Gyeonggi Governor Kim Moon-soo; Geum Jong-rye, chairman of the Commission on Economics, Science and Technology of Gyeonggi Provincial Assembly; Park Jung-oh, deputy mayor of Ansan; Park Chung-taek, president of Gyeonggi Institute of Science and Technology Promotion; Park Sang-cheon, vice-president of Hanyang University; Kim In-gyo, chairman of National Technopark Association; and CEOs of companies in Gyeonggi.
Gyeonggi TP proclaimed the new vision of ”the cradle of regional technological innovation, the crib of creation of the knowledge industry,” announcing the fundamental goals of developing Ansan Science Valley clusters, founding and nurturing new enterprises, and enhancing technology of SMEs. They announced the strategies of promoting technological enhancement of SMEs, establishing support systems for start-ups and moved-in enterprises, building a network hub for exchange and cooperation, and actualizing small but strong organizations.
Governor Kim Moon-soo said in the congratulatory message that,“Ansan is a successful new town with housing, Banwol-Sihwa Industrial Complex, and Hanyang University as well as a high rate of parks and greens,” adding, “I hope Gyeonggi TP makes the best use of its great locational conditions and excellent human resource to revitalize many companies.”
Governor Kim mentioned that,“The urban policy over the past 30 years degraded new towns like Bundang and Ilsan into bedroom towns and completely separated home and work; and regulations on capital areas prevented establishment of colleges, forcing students in the northern Gyeonggi regions to study at faraway areas,” and emphasized that, “We must not make any more bedroom towns in Gyeonggi Province, and create desirable jobs for the young. If we are to give good jobs for the young, there must be no regulations or discrimination on capital areas.”
Moreover, he added, “There is a need for a major shift in national policies such as making a special law for job creation rather than focusing on real estate. A city can only have self-sufficiency and vitality if it has places to live, work, rest and study.”
Gyeonggi TP was established in 1998 to promote regional industries by connecting professional and academic associations. It has played the role of an innovative institution by enhancing technologies of local strategic industries, supporting foundation and nurturing technology-intensive companies, establishing an organic collaborative system connecting industries and academia, building a base for regional technological innovation, and connecting and mediating businesses.
Furthermore, Gyeonggi TP attracted SMEs with promising technologies to Ansan, and so far 345 companies made the achievement of generating total KRW 2.5 trillion in sales and creating jobs for 10,000 people annually. Gyeonggi TP is also entrusted with local government projects in the province, carrying out and developing various enterprise support policies and programs.
The ‘technology doctor project’ began with the support of Gyeonggi Province in 2009 is the most representative support project of Gyeonggi TP. It is receiving great response from companies by solving technological problems of over 500 SMEs a year with the participation of 64 institutions focusing on universities and research centers in Gyeonggi Province.
“With financial difficulties due to the lack of interest and support from the central government, we are holding this vision proclamation ceremony to seek a new leap so that we can be more faithful to our practical roles and functions We will focus our competences through selection and verification, and create a small but strong organization,” said Gyeonggi TP chairman Moon Yoo-hyun.
