Gyeonggi Governor Kim Moon-soo is fascinated by the charm of ceramic art.
On October 12, Governor Kim visited Icheon Cerapia, in which the 2013 Gyeonggi International Ceramic Biennale (GICB) takes place, to take a look at the exhibits and encourage the relevant staff.
Over the holiday, Governor Kim looked around the exhibition with other visitors including children and families and also participated in various experience programs, marveling at the mysterious beauty of ceramics. He browsed around the Cerapia to enjoy the Ceramic Biennale with the citizens.
Korea Ceramic Foundation president Song Young-kun and Ceramic Biennale executive director Lee In-jin guided Governor Kim to the main exhibition ‘International Prize of GICB 2013’ and the special exhibition ‘HOT Rookies’ that attract the most visitors, where Governor Kim compared the characteristics of the ceramics after listening to the explanations about the artists, background and meaning of the works.
“This year, the ‘International Prize of GICB 2013’ switched to the competing method of nomination from contest, which attracts visitors with the outstanding omnibus composition of space where they can encounter high-level works that match the theme of the Biennale,” explained executive director Lee In-jin.

The special exhibition ‘HOT Rookies’ show off unique ideas of 20 young artists worldwide aged 40 and below, selected by online deliberation. Upon listening to Lee’s explanation, Governor Kim asked questions about the time and process of ceramic production, and commented on their “excellent artistic value” and “the amazing works of the new artists.”
Governor Kim also stopped by the Creative Workshop and watched the artists make glass crafts. “It must be so difficult, and I’m proud of you for creating such beauty,” he encouraged the artists. He also greeted the Nambang TV reporters from Guangdong, China in Cantonese. “I hope the ceramics of Gyeonggi Province and Guangdong develop further in cooperation,” he said.
In Exhibition Hall 2 there are ‘breakable’ works that indicate the significance of birth by showing a ceramic egg roll along the rail and break. Here, Governor Kim explained the concept by personally rolling the egg for the visitors to see.
This year there was the first ceramics competition for the disabled, ‘Bounce! Bounce! Beating Heart.’ The executive director explained that the exhibit displays “emotions that cannot be portrayed by the non-disabled,” to which Governor Kim replied, “They’re beautiful. I can feel something special from their works.”

After the tour of the exhibition, Governor Kim went over to the booths selling ceramics and local specialties with Icheon Mayor Cho Byung-don, greeting the visitors as he walked by. He encountered a group of visitors from Uiseong, Gyeongbuk on the way, to whom he asked, “Uiseong is famous for garlic, so how did this year’s garlic farming go?” He also added, “Welcome to the Gyeonggi Province Ceramic Biennale. I hope you enjoy a wonderful time here.”
He stopped by the local specialties section in a corner of the Cerapia, where he sampled rice chips made of Icheon rice and a plum. He bought a box of plums on the spot, claiming, “Icheon’s autumn plums are the delicacy of the season.”
“The beautiful landscape of nature and a harmony of culture and art make the Cerapia the best place to visit,” said Governor Kim. “There are a variety of ceramic exhibitions all over the world, but this is the only place where you can enjoy various experiences. The Ceramic Biennale must be further improved to attract people for revisit.”
Kicking off with the opening ceremony ‘Ceramic Night (Doyaje)’ on the 28th of last month, the 2013 GICB is held in Icheon Cerapia, Gwangju Gonjiam Ceramic Park and Yeoju Ceramic World until November 17th with the topic of ‘Community.’ Various other programs will be provided such as international ceramics workshops and conferences aside from exhibitions.
