With the expected achievement of Gyeonggi’s first annual export of $100 billion, Gyeonggi Governor Kim Moon-soo gave an encouraging round of applause for export entrepreneurs.
Gyeonggi held the 2013 Gyeonggi Province Export Entrepreneurs’ Day event on December 12 at the Ramada Plaza Suwon in celebration of the biggest accomplishment of exports in history as well as trade of $1 trillion for three years in a row.
The ceremony was hosted by the Gyeonggi Exporters Association and the Gyeonggi branch of Korea International Trade Association. Over 300 related officials and export entrepreneurs attended the event, including Governor Kim Moon-soo; Geum Jong-rye, chairman of the Commission on Economics, Science and Technology of Gyeonggi Provincial Assembly; Lee Young-sik, chairman of the Gyeonggi Exporters Association; and Lee Jin-ho, head of the Gyeonggi branch of Korea International Trade Association.
“Despite many handicaps this year, export entrepreneurs have created good products that captured the heart of the world and contributed to Gyeonggi’s accomplishment in securing the top position in exports, resulting in Korea’s greatest export performance in history,” said Governor Kim in his celebratory message.
“Your efforts become the hope of Korea. I would like to give a round of applause for the workers of exporters who have made hidden efforts in the front lines of export. I’m certain that Korea will continue to develop the myth that we have created in the global market and accomplish the second Miracle on the Han River.”
Governor Kim also encouraged the winning companies of the Export Tower presentation ceremony and had a commemorative photograph taken. A total of 483 companies in Gyeonggi were awarded the Export Tower this year, and 138 companies attended the event that day. In addition, 38 persons of merit who contributed to the promotion of exports, exchange and cooperation were given citations from Gyeonggi Governor and Small and Medium Business Association (SMBA) chairman.

Gyeonggi secured the top position in Korea in terms of export for seven consecutive months starting April this year, with exports of $83.8 billion by October. This showed an increase of 15.2% compared to the corresponding period last year, and the monthly exports exceeded $9 billion for the first time ever.
Considering the monthly average export (about $8.4 billion) in Gyeonggi this year, the province forecasts that it will easily achieve $100 billion in exports for the first time ever.
“The Trading Day, enacted to commemorate the achievement of $100 million in export back in 1964, is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year,” said Lee Jin-ho, head of the Gyeonggi branch of Korea International Trade Association. “If Gyeonggi maintains the currently increasing trend of exports, we will achieve the first-ever $100 billion in export this year and secure the top position in exports in Korea as well.”
He also added, “Gyeonggi’s achievement of $100 billion in export is an incredible accomplishment equivalent to total annual exports of individual countries, such as Vietnam, a recently rising market ($110.8 billion); Denmark, an advanced country with the national income of $60,000 ($103.3 billion); and Hungary ($100.6 billion), which joined the OECD in the same year as Korea did.
“As an export entrepreneur in Gyeonggi, I am extremely proud,” said Lee Young-sik, chairman of the Gyeonggi Exporters Association. “We will take the initiative in solving problems of exports by meeting the demands of small and medium exporters through continuous on-site discussions.”
