Five Gyeonggi festivals including the Icheon Rice Cultural Festival are selected as leading festivals that represent Korea.

Gyeonggi Province announced on December 16 that, as a result of selection by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism for 2014 Cultural Tourism Festivals that evaluated over 100 local festivals recommended by 17 cities and provinces, the Icheon Rice Cultural Festival and the Jarasum International Jazz Festival were selected as Premier Festivals, and the Suwon Gwaseong Cultural Festival, Yeoju Ogok Naru Festival and Paju Booksori Festival as Promising Festivals.

Gyeonggi Province recommended eight festivals in this selection, and five of them were selected. Aside from the Icheon Rice Cultural Festival, Jarasum International Jazz Festival, and Suwon Gwaseong Cultural Festival, which are all former Cultural Tourism Festivals, the Yeoju Ogok Naru Festival and Paju Booksori Festival were added as Promising Festivals for the first time. The Premier Festivals receive the governmental and provincial support of KRW 370 million, and the Promising Festivals receive KRW 130 million.

“This accomplishment is a product of enhancing competitiveness through the top-ten festival selection within the province based on professional evaluation as well as local festival consulting,” said Lee Jin-soo, director of Gyeonggi Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau. “We will make continuous efforts for the development of local festivals in the province.”
