Gyeonggi Province published a general guidebook on everything pertaining to the DMZ.

Gyeonggi Province announced on January 9 that it has published Korean and English versions of the general information guidebook Whispers of the DMZ to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), as well as to shed new light on the value of the DMZ and promote its value globally.

Despite domestic and global interest in the DMZ, most English as well as Korean literature in this area was either in the form of travel brochures or focused only on specific topics. Accordingly, Gyeonggi Province published the Korean and English versions of this book on the DMZ in order to promote global interest and understanding, as international cooperation related to the DMZ is especially significant at this point in time.

Whispers of the DMZ features 12 experts from different fields discussing diverse prospects and applications of the value and vision of the DMZ. The book is structured to help people understand the DMZ from diverse points of view through the division of its contents into four parts and 10 chapters that encompass the history of the DMZ and the lives of residents living near the Civilian Control Line as well as its geography, topography, ecological environment, cultural assets, policies, pending issues and future plans.

Of particular note, the book features a Pictorial DMZ section that introduces and covers details of peacetime security, ecology, and tours of historical remains around the DMZ through photographs, including eight villages within the Civilian Control Line areas, Chugaryeong structural valley, and precipitous riverside cliffs.

“This general guidebook on the DMZ encompasses the past, present and future of the DMZ as well as its prospects in a single volume, and will help to attract local and global attention,” said Lee Seong-geun, Director of Gyeonggi Province’s DMZ Policy Division. “The English version of Whispers of the DMZ is expected to be used by global experts to further their understanding of the true value of the DMZ and promote various collaborative efforts.”
