The Pyeonghwa Nuri Trail Walkathon offers a rare chance to walk along the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ). It will take place in Goyang City on March 15.
Hosted by Goyang City of Gyeonggi Province and overseen by the Gyeonggi Tourism Organization, this Walkathon will take place on a 12km-long trail running from Ilsan Lake Park and a military patrol trail to the Goyang Training Center. Participants can walk along Janghang Swamp and a nearby site with barbed-wire fencing, a special feature of the military patrol trail that is usually off-limits.
The 2014 Pyeonghwa Nuri Trail Walkathon, sub-themed “In Search of the DMZ’s Peace and Happiness,” also includes a variety of events that offer participants a chance to reflect on the meaning of happiness such as the Happy Photo Exhibition, Peace Ribbon Hanging and the Sending of Thank-you Texts.
Moreover, this Walkathon will collect a certain amount of money whenever participants walk along the Pyeonghwa Nuri Trail, which will be used in the conservation of the DMZ. Student participants who apply in advance can receive certificates of volunteer hours for environmental cleanup activities.
Those who want to participate in the Pyeonghwa Nuri Trail Walkathon can apply through the official website (www.walkyourdmz.com) starting from 10 AM on February 10 to noon on March 7. A total of 500 applicants will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis with a payment of KRW 10,000 as the entry fee.
