Pyeongtaek Port ranked no.1 for four consecutive years in the handling of car imports and exports.

The Gyeonggi Pyeongtaek Port Corporation (GPPC) announced on February 27 a total car import-export volume of 1,446,177 units was handled at Pyeongtaek Port last year, showing a 4.8% year-on-year increase. The car handling sector continued its smooth sailing this January, recording 118,616 units.

The volume of cars handled by model last year was as follows: Kia Motors 711,080 units, imported cars 162,132 units, Hyundai Motor Company 88,835 units, Ssangyong Motor Company 34,350 units, and used cars 8,067 units.

Of particular note, the number of cars handled since 2001, when Pyeongtaek Port first began such operations, reached a record of 10.7 million units. If a corresponding number of cars (midsize) were lined up end to end, they would circle the earth (40,000 km); if piled high, they would be 1,735 times higher than Mt. Everest, which stands 8,848 m above sea level.

“Pyeongtaek Port has optimal conditions for berthing large vessels at all times based on superb natural conditions and a stable water level,” said Jung Seung-Bong, President of the Gyeonggi Pyeongtaek Port Corporation. “Also, there are many car manufacturing plants, auto parts suppliers and PDI centers located near the port. This enables the procurement of sufficient in-out bound supplies, and thereby serves as a great contributor to the increase.”

He added, “We will cooperate with related organizations to enhance the brand value of Pyeongtaek Port and improve our services so as to solidify the port’s status as a mecca for the automobile industry in Korea.”

In terms of car volume, by handling 946,949 units in 2010, 1,272,354 units in 2011, 1,378,865 units in 2012, and 1,446,177 units in 2013, Pyeongtaek Port has been ranked no.1 for four consecutive years.
