Gyeonggi Province announced on May 12 that it will operate the “DMZ Fam Tour with Filmmakers” in the DMZ on May 14.
The fam (familiarization) tour provided firsthand DMZ experiences to people involved in the film industry including film studio CEOs, movie directors, producers and scenario writers. It was prepared so as to provide them with opportunities to develop diverse visual contents inspired by the themes of division, unification and peace while also promoting the use of the area surrounding the DMZ as a filming location.
Over 90 people from the film industry participated in the tour, including film producer Lee Eun (CEO of Myung Films), Won Dong-yeon (CEO of REALies Pictures), film director Heo Jeong (director of Hide and Seek), and Shin Shin Tae-ra (director of My Girlfriend Is An Agent and Runway Cop).
Gyeonggi Province organized visits to Camp Greaves, the 3rd Tunnel, Dorasan Station, Dora Observatory, Haemaruchon and the Tomb of Heo Jun for the filmmakers in order to facilitate their understanding of the DMZ and its well-preserved ecology while also promoting the use of the DMZ as inspiration for content and as a filming location with the incorporation of their input.
“Based on the filmmakers’ experiences in this project, we’ll be able to produce mutually beneficial effects in developing new filming locations as well as in enhancing the tourism effects and brand value of the DMZ through a range of film content related to the DMZ,” said Seo Yong-woo, executive director of the Gyeonggi Film Commission.
“The DMZ Fam Tour with Filmmakers will promote the win-win growth of the DMZ and the film contents industry. It will also contribute significantly to the vitalization of the regional economy by attracting personnel for DMZ film productions and subsequently increasing the number of visitors after such films air,” said Oh Who-seok, Director General of Gyeonggi Province’s Balanced Development Bureau.
