The Women’s Business Trade Promotion Delegation returned on June 8 after realizing significant achievements in the US market.
Comprised of representatives from 10 women-led firms, the delegation engaged in various trade promotion activities in New York and LA from June 1 to 8. Delegation members participated in 87 consultations worth a combined value of USD 50.3 million (equivalent to KRW 51.4 billion), and signed 75 contracts worth USD 11.8 million (equivalent to KRW 12.1 billion).
The delegation, one of the unique projects of Gyeonggi Province, was initiated to help strengthen the competitiveness and competence of women-led businesses in the global market.
Such trade promotion delegations are generally drawn from 10 firms based in the province. Firm representatives participate in preliminary meetings with foreign buyers invited by the Overseas Business Consultation Center, and those firms with a high possibility of signing contracts are then selected for dispatch overseas.
However, the preliminary meeting was skipped given the fact that the participating firms are small and produce various kinds of products while the US market is quite extensive. Accordingly, accompanied by local interpreters, the delegation members met directly with buyers.
Ho Geum-ok, President of Hope Ltd. (Korea Women Entrepreneurs Association Gyeonggi Branch Director), a delegation member, said, “I really enjoyed participating in consultations with buyers who need our products with the help of interpreters knowledgeable about trade. I am quite confident that contracts will be signed.”
Kim Neung-sik, Director of the International Affairs and Trade Division, said, “The Women’s Business Trade Promotion Delegation was established in 2012. I am very proud to see the delegation successfully enter the US market, the biggest consumer market in the world,” He added, “I hope the delegation will contribute to boosting exports for women-led businesses and vitalizing the regional economy”.
Following the US mission, the province plans to dispatch the Women’s Business Trade Promotion Delegation to the Shanghai G-Fair in August, to Japan in September and to Southeast Asia in November.
