Operated by the Northern Gyeonggi Provincial Government Office for the first time in Korea, the pilot project, entitled Saving the Cardiac Arrest Victims, has been highly acclaimed by residents.

The province offers CPR training sessions to 40,000-odd residents of 6 Danji Garam Maeul in the Unjeong District of Paju City on Saturday mornings every other month for their convenience.

The training session this month took place on June 14. In order to enhance the ability of trainees to respond in such a situation, a simulation session of emergency procedures in a scenario in which a resident living in a high-rise apartment building far from the apartment complex entrance suffered cardiac arrest planned to take place in early July.

Because the training takes place within the apartment complex, many households participated in the session together. Such training also helps the participating family members strengthen their bonds.

On May 21, a health center of Paju City also offered an emergency training session to parents with infants or toddlers. Since there are a number of young children living in the apartment complex, it was selected for the pilot project.

Ordinarily, if a resident of a high-rise apartment building suffers cardiac arrest, the victim is not expected to recover even if emergency personnel are dispatched quickly to transfer the victim to an emergency room. This is primarily due to the unlikelihood that CPR will be performed within the golden time of four minutes.

Gyeonggi Province plans to expand this project into four areas during the 2nd half of this year.
