You must have heard the expression ‘Coyote Ugly’, which was the title of a movie released in 2000. One song from that movie, ‘Can’t Fight the Moonlight’ by Leann Rimes, was quite appealing. Incidentally, do you know what ‘Coyote Ugly’ means? It was also mentioned in the movie. ‘Coyote Ugly’ refers to ‘extreme ugliness’. It has been reported that some coyotes, if caught in a trap, will chew off the trapped leg in order to escape. Likewise, just imagine that you get drunk and sleep with someone. What if, upon waking, you find that the person sleeping on your arm is extremely unattractive? You may want to cut off your arm in order to escape just like a coyote. Thus the expression ‘Coyote Ugly’, according to the movie, is used in such a situation to express ‘extreme ugliness’. However, it seems harsh to use the word ‘coyote’ to denote ugliness. If you see the coyotes in Gyeonggi Province that have successfully reproduced, you may find them extremely cute.
The Gyeonggi-do Livestock and Veterinary Service revealed that cloned coyotes have succeeded in natural reproduction. The cloned coyote pair gave birth to three coyote pups. Look at the newly born pups… Aren’t they cute?
The institute raised the female coyote and male coyote separately for a while. Last June, two groups of female and male coyotes were put together; a pair mated in January this year, and gave birth to two male pups and one female pup on March 30. They are growing well.
The institute successfully raised 8 cloned coyote pups that had been donated by the Sooam Biotech Research Foundation in 2011, and already donated a coyote pair to Daegu Dalseo Park in April 2012.
This year, the cloned coyote mother and her pup were sent to the Busan Samjeong Zoo in April following the success in natural reproduction. They are open for viewing by the general public. Please visit the zoo to see these lovely and plucky coyotes.
Coyotes are quite cute when they are young. However, they grow to become very nimble and strong animals that are capable of running at speeds of up to 64 kilometers per hour. It’s also worth noting that they sometimes work together with completely different animal species like badgers for hunting. Coyotes use their superior sense of smell to identify the location of prey, and badgers use their hooked claws to dig out small animals living underground. They then share the prey they caught together without conflict. They are cute, brave and cooperative. I think we shouldn’t use the word ‘coyote’ to denote ugliness anymore.
