The Customized Maintenance Project of Gyeonggi Province refers to a new method for revitalizing urban areas by introducing the Maeul-Mandeulgi technique to the Residential Environment Management Project. Of particular note, the project targets dilapidated urban areas with unfavorable residential environments, including regions removed from the New Town list, and transforms them into areas with pleasant residential environments. This project is led by residents and supported by public and regional organizations.

The province announced on July 2 that Suwon Maesan, Seongnam Dandae, Namyangju Gunjang and Osan Omei Marketplace have been selected through the Urban Regeneration Regional Development Project competition, organized by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, and will receive KRW 10 billion in government funding by the year of 2018.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport organized the Urban Regeneration Regional Development Project competition as a comprehensive support project for basic local governments corresponding to Urban Regeneration Regions in order to encourage local government development. With 50 percent of total costs covered by central government funding, the project reduces the burden on local governments, and is thus more beneficial to local governments than the Residential Environment Management Project, which only supports 30 percent of total costs through government expenditure.

The four selected districts can modify or expand infrastructure including roads, public parking lots and parks, and community facilities such as community halls, senior citizen centers and  a daycare centers. With a total cost of KRW 20 billion, the project will receive KRW 10 billion in funding from the central government, KRW 3 billion from the provincial government, and KRW 7 billion from the city/county government.

A Gyeonggi provincial official explained that it takes time to establish administrative processes. Prior establishment through a tailored maintenance project played a crucial role in being selected as a beneficiary of the project.

The Siheung Eunhang District and the Uiwang Geumcheon District also established their maintenance plans through  last year’s project. These two districts will implement project work with a total of KRW 10 billion including provincial funding from the second half of this year to 2017.

Each of the ten areas selected for the Customized Maintenance Project last year has been establishing maintenance plans on the basis of resident preferences with total funding of KRW 100 million (KRW 30 million from the provincial government and KRW 70 million from the city/county government). Gyeonggi Province received applications for the implementation of this year’s project in three villages up until July 31.
