Gyeonggi Province once again brings the ‘light for learning’ to Honduras in Central America.

The Gyeonggi Provincial Institute for Lifelong Learning (GILL) will send a delegation led by the president of the institute, Lee Sung, and the director of Credu, Kim Mi-jung, to Honduras from August 4 to 12.

In a continuation of last year’s initiative, this visit was planned as part of the “2014 International Development and Cooperation Project” that Gyeonggi Province has carried forward in order to provide a better education environment as well as the benefits of diverse lifelong learning programs in Central America.

During the visit, the delegation will install solar panels, computers and internet connections at four schools lacking electricity that are selected by the Ministry of Education of Honduras. In addition, “Village Leadership Training” for about 30 teachers and residents will be provided to help improve their self-reliance capabilities.

Employing an action-learning method, “Village Leadership Training” will instruct local participants in the founding principles of the New Community Movement of Korea – ‘diligence,’ ‘self-help’ and ‘collaboration’ – and also help them resolve conflicts within their villages on their own.

A workshop will also be held for those who were invited to Korea and completed the village leadership training last year to review their progress over the past year and to consult on how to proceed going forward.

On August 7, GILL President Lee Sung will participate in a literacy education meeting hosted by the Organization of Ibero-American States (OEI) in San Pedro Sula, Honduras, and present the case of Korea on the theme of “literacy and basic education for youth and adults.”

The meeting will be joined by over 300 officials and college students from Latin American countries – including Honduras, Mexico and Paraguay – to discuss literacy education in Central and South America.

On August 13, before returning to Korea, the delegation will pay a visit to the Honduran Minister of Education, Marlon Escoto, and the Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ochoa Madrid, to share the results of last year’s ODA program and to discuss ways to enhance cooperation between the two countries.

In July and August of 2013, GILL, in cooperation with the OEI, installed solar panels and internet connections at rural schools that lack electricity, and provided a lifelong learning leadership training program to local residents for regional development. Later in October, GILL invited local residents to Korea and provided them with an in-depth village leadership training program. Such organized efforts have earned GILL a favorable reputation.

In Honduras, one of the ODA target countries, over 6,000 schools have no electricity. To provide its people with an appropriate environment for education, Honduras needs help and support from the international community.
