Gyeonggi Province Governor Nam Kyung-pil returned home on September 27 after completing his one-night, two-day visit to China, which was made to participate in the Korea-China Forum for the Future and to attract Shanghai International Studies University to the province.

During the visit, Governor Nam Kyung-pil emphasized amicable cooperation between the two countries for the peaceful unification of the Korean Peninsula, and also made efforts to attract a Chinese university campus to the province.

On the morning of September 27, Governor Nam participated in the Korea-China Forum for the Future, which was held by the Korean Consulate General in Shanghai (Consul General Gu Sangchan) and the Shanghai Public Diplomacy Association (President Feng Guo Ching).

At the forum, Governor Nam emphasized solid and amicable cooperation between the two countries, saying, “China’s rapid economic and societal growth is a challenge and an opportunity for Korea at the same time. Leaders and politicians of both countries must take the lead in changing the whirlwind into cool breeze through consideration, communication and exchanges.” Citing the words of Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun, he added, “Even a pig can fly if it sits in the right spot during a whirlwind.”

He also clearly stated his commitment to his role as a local diplomatist for the unification of the Korean Peninsula. “It is very critical to have a common understanding that a denuclearized and unified Korea is much better for neighboring countries and for peaceful development in Northeast Asia than a divided Korea with nuclear capability. As the Governor of Gyeonggi Province, whose responsibilities include preparation for the reunification of Korea, I will take the lead in advancing local diplomacy through communication and exchanges among the leaders and politicians of the two countries,” said Governor Nam.

Later in the afternoon, he visited Shanghai International Studies University at the invitation of President Cao Deming, and discussed ways to attract a campus of Shanghai International Studies University to Gyeonggi Province.

Governor Nam strongly expressed his support for establishing a university campus in the province, saying, “If a Chinese college campus is established in Gyeonggi Province, which borders North Korea, it will contribute to encouraging the mutual economic growth of South Korea and China, and to maintaining peace in Northeast Asia.”

A number of foreign educational institutions are located in some regions of Korea including Daegu City, Incheon City and Busan City; they are mostly from the US, Germany and Belgium. If Gyeonggi Province successfully attracts a campus of Shanghai International Studies University to its region, it will be the first Chinese higher educational institution in Korea.

After the meeting, Governor Nam also visited the Maeheon Yoon Bong-gil memorial near the campus, accompanied by President Cao Deming.
