Of the 11 applications that Gyeonggi Province submitted to the Cultural Heritage Administration this year, a total of eight, including the former cultural center in Suwon, are registered as cultural assets.
Gyeonggi Province announced on October 20 that the ‘bloodied clothes of Lyuh Woon-hyung’ are registered as a cultural asset, the 8th registration this year, after deliberations of the Modern Cultural Heritage Division held on October 14.
Gyeonggi Province, for the first time among the metropolitan municipalities, conducted a fact-finding survey of modern cultural properties within the province, and submitted applications for 11 cultural properties to the Cultural Heritage Administration this January after research completed by experts.
In March, the Cultural Heritage Administration conducted a field study of the cultural properties for which the province submitted applications, and then first registered the Goan Water Level Observatory in Namyangju City, Jipyeong Brewery in Yangpyeong County, and Heungguk Temple in Goyang City as cultural assets. In September, the former cultural center in Suwon City, the former city hall of Suwon, the Haengju Water Level Observatory in Goyang City, and Big Nosed Comic Book in Bucheon City were also included in the list of cultural assets.
All the registrations serve as opportunities to highlight precious cultural assets that survived the turbulent times of modern Korea from the 1910s to 50s.
An official of Gyeonggi Province said, “With such efforts made by Gyeonggi Province, we hope to draw more attention to our modern cultural properties, and to encourage voluntary efforts to protect them.”
