Grand prize in policy and management category for “stable water management of Paldang Lake”

The Gyeonggi Water Resources Headquarters, which manages Paldang Lake, the water source for 25 million residents in the capital area, was honored at the 2014 7th SBS Water Environment Awards.
Selected for the Asiatic Black Bear Award, the grand prize in the policy and management category of the water environment awards, the Gyeonggi Water Resources Headquarters received the honor at the award ceremony held in the SBS Prism Tower on November 24.
The SBS Water Environment Awards, which honor individuals and organizations that have made notable contributions in the field of water and environment, first started in 2008.
The Gyeonggi Water Resources Headquarters received the grand award for the stable water management of Paldang Lake. The water resource headquarters undertook the Paldang Lake water quality improvement project; as a result, the biochemical oxygen demand of Gyeongan Stream was reduced from 4.8㎎/ℓ in 2006 to 2.2㎎/ℓ last year.
The water resources headquarters, which began in 1989 as a management office for the Paldang water source, assumed responsibility for ensuring water quality for the entire Gyeonggi area as it was reorganized into the Paldang Water Quality Improvement Headquarters in 2006. This past October 2nd, it was renamed the Gyeonggi Water Resources Headquarters.
Gyeonggi Water Resources Headquarters Director Kim Han-seop said, “We still have a long way to go to ensure that all 25 million residents in the capital area are fully satisfied with the water supply. Taking this award as an impetus, we will continue to proactively play a role as a center of water management in Gyeonggi Province by improving the water quality of Paldang Lake, promoting the water management industry in the province, and adopting reasonable environmental regulations.”
The 7th SBS Water Environment Awards ceremony aired at 10:00am on December 5.
