The provincial government received the Prime Minister’s Award for contributing to the development of civil service in two categories – ‘Best Practice in Civil Service Improvement’ and ‘Civil Service for People’s Happiness’ – from the Ministry of Government Administration and Home Affairs during the 5th Civil Service Officials’ Day at The K Hotel & Resort on December 8.

Gyeonggi Province was the only local government to receive an award in the ‘Civil Service for People’s Happiness’ category, which was introduced for the first time this year.

An official of the provincial government said, “The Public Service Center in Gyeonggi Province is the only civil service center in Korea that is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. We provide services in consideration of residents, so this service is receiving positive responses”. The official added, “Of particular note, we operate the ‘Let’s Meet the Governor’ program through which Governor Nam Kyung-pil meets residents every Friday to address their issues. Through this program, we can actively communicate with residents.”

Gyeonggi Province and the Ministry of Employment and Labor shared the award in the category of ‘Best Practice in Civil Service Improvement’ for providing ‘Tailored One-stop Employment Welfare Services for Clients’.

The provincial government opened the Employment Welfare Plus Center, the first of its kind in Korea, in Namyangju City on January 6. It also plans to open another center in Dongducheon City, expanding the center’s operations via additional services, namely employment support windows for discharged soldiers, financial windows for ordinary people, and cultural communities.

The Employment Welfare Plus Center is expected to spread throughout the country via the efforts of Gyeonggi Province. The center is regarded as a model of Government 3.0 in terms of cooperation between the central and local governments since residents can accomplish all tasks related to employment just by visiting one center.

Jung Byeong-yun, the chief official of the Public Service Center of Gyeonggi Province, said, “The award serves as a platform to firmly secure the status of the civil service of Gyeonggi Province”. He added, “We will not rest on our laurels, but rather will discover and spread best practices for improving the civil service so as to ensure customer happiness.”
