Gyeonggi Province takes first step in fulfilling its future in 20 years
Today a lead-off briefing session for the research and service project to establish Gyeonggi Vision 2040 took place.
Gyeonggi Province has been implementing Gyeonggi Vision 2020 ever since the strategy was established in 1997. Rapid changes throughout the years, however, have resulted in the need for a new vision and strategy. To that end, Gyeonggi Province has decided to establish ‘Gyeonggi Vision 2040’. The Gyeonggi Research Institute will undertake the research and services required to formulate Gyeonggi Vision 2040.
More than 40 members participated in the briefing session including Gyeonggi Provincial Council Chairman Kang Deuk-gu, Gyeonggi Provincial Council Planning and Budget Committee Chairman Bae Soo-moon, Gyeonggi Research Institute President Lim Hea-kyu and lead researcher Dr. Lee Sang-dae, Dr. Woo Cheon-sik of the Korea Development Institute, and Dr. Park Byeong-won of the Korea Institute of S&T Evaluation and Planning, as well as the heads of relevant agencies and other key figures.
The foremost attribute of Gyeonggi Vision 2040 is that it sets the future image of Gyeonggi Province as desired by its residents. Accordingly, the provincial government and provincial council will coordinate with each another and hold discussions in each region of the province to collect a wide range of opinions from all social segments. Gyeonggi Province will also establish a participation group for Gyeonggi residents along with other participation groups for various social organizations. Furthermore, the provincial government will operate a forum and a standing advisory board to reflect the views and suggestions of experts from each sector in Korea.
Applications for the Gyeonggi resident participation group will be accepted until March so to allow residents from various social segments to participate in the group. Opinions will be collected primarily in April and May, and will be used in creating a future image and form of Gyeonggi Province as desired by its residents.
“Plans established in the past such as Gyeonggi Province 2020, the Gyeonggi Comprehensive Plan, and others contained plans as well as the execution methods for those plans on a national level. This meant that they were unsatisfactory with regards to the role of Gyeonggi Province and the vision created for the province. They also did not feature great responses to new variables such as the unification of North and South Korea. We must be able to establish a mid-to-long term vision and strategy by diagnosing the present and predicting the future. We must also achieve our future image through continued management of these plans.” – Dr. Lee Sang-dae, Gyeonggi Research Institute –
“It would be a significant achievement if we take the vision created by Gyeonggi Province and make it the vision for Korea instead of simply receiving global standards from the central government. Please create a platform for communication that allows researchers to deal with as many uncertainties as possible.” – Dr. Woo Cheon-sik, Korea Development Institute, and Dr. Park Byeong-won, Korea Institute of S&T Evaluation and Planning –
“The title says ‘Gyeonggi Province 2040’; however, it will be great to approach the project by looking 100 years into the future. We will offer support to help Gyeonggi Province 2040 become the backbone of our provincial government and prepare for the future.” – Chairman Kang Deuk-gu–
‘Next Gyeonggi’ is a future built together. The future is owned by those who pursue it; therefore we must build our future together.
The Gyeonggi Provincial Government aims to complete the establishment of Gyeonggi Vision 2040 and to declare the vision and strategy for Gyeonggi Province by October this year. The provincial government will analyze future changes and megatrends that surround the province and offer mid-to-long term response strategies, future indicators and more that will help us achieve our future image.
We hope that you will aspire and strive with us to make Gyeonggi Province’s standard a national and global standard.
