Gyeonggi Province hosts the 6th National Speaking Competition for children from married immigrants and multicultural families.

With Together Day (May 20) and Multicultural Week coming up, this year’s competition aims to foster happy multicultural families and develop global talent. As such, it is divided into the Korean-speaking competition for married immigrants, and the multilingual-speaking competition for children of multicultural families.

Participants are free to choose any topic. Married immigrants who entered the country after January 1, 2010, and children of multicultural families born between 1997 and 2009 who are currently enrolled in elementary, middle or high schools are eligible for the competition.

The Korean-speaking allots 2 minutes and 30 seconds to each contestant, while the multilingual-speaking competition allots 1 minute and 30 seconds in Korean and an additional 1 minute and 30 seconds in the native language of the contestants’ parents.

Prospective participants can submit video clips of up to 3 minutes along with manuscripts until April 10 to the Multicultural Families Division (jsn0609@gg.go.kr) of Gyeonggi Province.

Qualification rounds will take place on April 29 at the Gyeonggi Provincial Complex with the video footage submitted by each participant. Twenty participants selected for their excellence will be rewarded with the opportunity to participate in the main competition. Each year’s event selects a top award winner (KRW 1,100,000 in prize money), 2 outstanding award winners (KRW 700,000 each), 2 encouragement award winners (KRW 500,000 each), and 5 participation award winners (KRW 300,000 each).

In last year’s competition, the multilingual category was won by Lim Ha-enul (student) from Ansan with a speech entitled ‘My Dream’, the Korean language category was won by Nguyen Ti Tuetlan with a speech entitled ‘The Heart of a Mother’.
