[Anchor line] Gyeonggi Province is pursuing the development of communities in areas with large numbers of multicultural family residents. The goal is to foster towns in which local people and multicultural families can prosper mutually. Lee Tae-hee reports.

This is a town school in which afterschool English classes are being held.

The school holds three-hour long foreign language classes targeting local students. The teachers are marriage-based immigrants who reside in the area.

They are using their mother tongues for community education.

The students can obtain a superior education without attending expensive afterschool programs, and they can also feel emotional comfort as they are taught in the neighborhood.

“Everyone is good at their mother tongue. So, I want to use that ability for the students here to become a caring teacher.”

With the opening of the multicultural town school, Gyeonggi Province has embarked on the development of multicultural communities. 

The goal is to develop local communities in which native and multicultural families can prosper together.

“By fostering the best of various traits and characteristics of a multicultural town, the province seeks to realize communities in which organic and interactive relationships can be formed and mutually beneficial. We will continue our efforts in creating stepping stones for such initiatives.”

Currently, such communities are being developed in 26 areas in Gyeonggi Province. 

It is anticipated that this program will not only be an opportunity for the immigrant women to utilize their skills but for the children of multicultural and native families to interact with each other.
