Events to be held 16 times from May to November for the U.S. Armed Forces personnel and their families residing in the province; various programs including DMZ tunnel visits and Korean cultural experiences to be staged

Gyeonggi Province will hold “Security and Cultural Events for U.S. Armed Forces in Korea 2015” for USFK personnel and their families from May to November.

The event has been designed to promote a shared consensus on the security level of the Korean peninsula and enhance relations between the U.S. and Korea. This year, the event will target 640 U.S. Armed Forces personnel and their families and will be held 16 times. 

The program features diverse events including DMZ, tunnel, Panmunjom and Cheonanham tours where one can learn about the high security level, as well as kimchi making and traditional tea sessions at Suwon Hwaseong and the Korean Folk Village for onsite cultural experiences.

During the first event held on May 2, U.S. Armed Forces personnel and their families visited the Icheon Ceramics Festival and participated in various cultural sessions such as wheel spinning and traditional tea making. The next event will also take place at the Icheon Ceramics Festival on May 20 and at the Paju DMZ on May 20.  

Park Tae-young, an official with the Military and Government Cooperation Division of the Gyeonggi Provincial Government said, “The best way to help the U.S. military feel closer to Korea is to showcase our traditional cultural and history, as well as the security conditions, .” He added, “I hope this event will help enhance mutual understanding and respect between Korea and the US.”
