Gyeonggi Province and the Gyeonggi Tourism Organization will proceed with the ‘Top 10 Nighttime Stars in Northern Gyeonggi’ project to promote tourism in northern Gyeonggi Province.

The project was developed on the premise that a tourism program enticing tourists to stay overnight is necessary to promote tourism in northern Gyeonggi, which has few attractions apart from unification and security-themed tourism.

As such, Gyeonggi Province received recommendations from each city and county in addition to conducting inquiries both on and offline up until the end of June. It selected 25 candidates for the nighttime attractions project and announced them on the Gyeonggi Tourism Organization’s website (ggtour.or.kr). Following the announcement, an online evaluation event took place to invite the assistance of netizens in trimming the candidates down to 15.

Among the 25 nighttime attraction candidates were: the Starlight Festival at the Garden of Morning Calm in Gapyeong; the Songam Space Center in Yangju; the Paju Provence Light Festival; the Pocheon Art Valley Astronomical Science Museum; and the Hantangang River Auto Camping Site in Yeoncheon.

Prizes including accommodation vouchers, meal vouchers, and admission tickets to major attractions were offered during the online evaluation event that ran from July 2 to 6. The event was aimed at promoting tourism resources in northern Gyeonggi in addition to attracting tourists to the region.

On July 8, Gyeonggi Province will select 10 final nighttime attractions from among the 15 candidates based on a final evaluation by an evaluation committee consisting of tourism experts.

The final 10 attractions will be packaged with information on nearby tourism resources and developed as comprehensive tourism contents that Gyeonggi Province plans to actively promote using domestic and international media outlets as well as the Gyeonggi Tourism Organization’s online site.

A provincial official noted, “Despite having plenty of outstanding tourism resources, northern Gyeonggi wasn’t well known until now because it had a reputation of being difficult to access.” The official added, “By selecting 10 nighttime attractions, we expect to promote the unique nightscape and activities in northern Gyeonggi and hope to use this as an opportunity to promote overnight tourism.”
