The Yangpyeong Yongmunsan Mountain Wild Greens Festival and Bucheon International Cartoon Festival have been listed among the top ten festivals of Gyeonggi Province for the first time.

On November 23, the Gyeonggi Provincial Government convened a local festival deliberation committee at the Gyeonggi Research Institute and selected the ‘2016 Gyeonggi Province Top Ten Festivals’.

The list of top ten festivals includes: the Icheon Rice Cultural Festival; the Gapyeong Jarasum Island International Jazz Festival; the Yeoncheon Jeongok-ri Paleolithic Festival; the Anseong Machum Namsadang Baudeogi Festival; the Yeoju Ogoknaru Festival; the Suwon Hwaseong Fortress Cultural Festival; the Siheung Gaetgol Festival; the Ansan Street Art Festival; the Yangpyeong Yongmunsan Mountain Wild Greens Festival; and the Bucheon International Cartoon Festival. Apart from the Yangpyeong and Bucheon festivals, the eight other festivals were selected for the top ten last year.

Unlike last year, university students were included in the observing evaluation group for this year’s evaluations to help reflect the opinions of younger generations. Also, safety evaluation criteria were added to raise awareness of safety issues. Safety evaluations were carried out by the Mobile Safety Inspection Division of the Gyeonggi Disaster and Safety Headquarters. Among the top ten point earners, eight were selected as part of the top ten festivals of Gyeonggi Province.

Gyeonggi Province intends to select three festivals from the top-ten list -including those held in Yeoncheon, Anseong, and Suwon – and add them to the existing list of festivals selected as cultural tourism festivals by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, including the Icheon, Gapyeong, and Yeoju festivals, bringing the list of cultural tourism festivals to six.

At the end of this year, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism will select cultural tourism festivals for 2016 from a list of local festivals across the country. Local events selected as cultural tourism festivals receive up to KRW 750 million from the national and provincial budgets (as of 2015).

Gyeonggi Province Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau Director Lee Jin-chan said, “Those selected as a top-ten festival will receive support from the provincial government to help develop their events including consultations for the festivals.” Director Lee also said, “We will analyze tourist trends using big data such as credit card information and help local festivals across Gyeonggi Province continue to develop in a sustainable fashion.
