On December 21, 2015, Gyeonggi Province announced that it had selected three additional late-night intercity bus (red bus) routes: Geumchon, Paju-si↔Bulgwang Station (no. 100), Hwaseong-si↔Yangjae Station (no. 1550-1), and Ganghwa·Gimpo-si↔Bupyeong Station (no. 90). The additional service lines will operate from January in 2016 after administrative processing.
The additional routes were selected based on the results of the ‘Study on the Improvement of the Operating System of Night Buses in Gyeonggi Province’ released by Gyeonggi Research Institute. In particular, the new routes connect outer areas of the province (Gimpo, Paju, Hwaseong) – where public transport services are relatively inadequate despite high demand – to Seoul and Incheon. Accordingly, the additional routes will help balance public transportation systems across the province.
Gyeonggi Province Bus Policy Division Director Hong Gwi-seon said, “Since passengers using late-night intercity buses are mainly working-class citizens, we plan to expand night bus services so that they can use our public transportation systems more conveniently.”
The number of passengers using the province’s safe and convenient late-night intercity buses has been on the rise, increasing from 680,000 in its first year in 2006 to 3,370,000 in 2009 and 4,380,000 in 2014.
In order to respond quickly to changing passenger trends attributed to the expanding range of commuters across the metropolitan area, Gyeonggi Province has subsidized 50% of any losses incurred from the operation of late-night intercity bus routes.
Currently, a total of 56 late-night intercity bus routes are in operation.
