Six food trucks will begin business at four government office locations
across the province including the provincial government complexes, the Gyeonggi
Provincial Museum, and the Gyeonggi Small & Medium Business Center starting
this March.

On January 28, Gyeonggi Province announced that it had selected a total
of six public food truck operators
two each to service the government complex in
Suwon and the Gyeonggi Small & Medium Business Center in addition to one
each to service the government complex in Uijeongbu and the Gyeonggi Provincial
Museum
using a lottery system.

As part of a project to stimulate food-selling vehicles, Gyeonggi
Province decided to expand business for public food trucks and held a public
lottery to select food truck operators between January 12 and 21.

Seven applicants applied for each of the two open spots at the Suwon government
complex and the Gyeonggi Small & Medium Business Center, representing a
competition rate of 3.5 to 1. A total of four operators
two each were drawn from
the applicants according to the Gyeonggi Province Public Asset Management
Ordinance. The Uijeongbu government complex and the Gyeonggi Provincial Museum each
only had one applicant; they therefore automatically became the operators for those
locations.

The operators selected to run the food trucks will go through a two-month
preparation period to modify their vehicles, undergo hygiene education, and
finish business registration. They will commence service in March.

The lottery to select food truck operators followed amendments made to
the Enforcement Regulations for the Food Sanitation Act in October 2015, which
expanded the scope of business for food trucks.

Provincial officials had been visiting the Korea Food and Drug
Administration, the Office for Government Coordination, and the Ministry of
Government Administration & Home Affairs with the proposal that food trucks
be allowed to operate in public locations and places designated by mayors and county
heads in order to stimulate the food truck industry.

After the amendments were made to the Enforcement Decree, Gyeonggi
Province began preparations to introduce food trucks at public locations and
selected four organizations: the Suwon government complex, the Uijeongbu government
complex, the Gyeonggi Provincial Museum, and the Gyeonggi Small & Medium
Business Center. After conferring with relevant departments, it established
plans to introduce and operate food trucks including details for business
locations and licensing fees. When the selected food truck operators open up
shop in March, they will become the first to operate within government complexes
in Korea.

Gyeonggi Province has 42 food trucks in operation as of January. Among
the 42, 21 food trucks (42 people) are run by young operators.

Gyeonggi Policy Planning and Budget Bureau Director General Lee Jae-cheol
said,
Since food trucks have proven very effective in creating new jobs for youths,
we will do our best to promote food trucks at public locations including city
and county offices in cooperation with the cities and counties in question.
Director General Lee
added,
Gyeonggi Province aims to operate 100 food trucks within the province by
the end of this year.
