On March 7, Gyeonggi Province announced it will
host five DMZ bicycle tour occasions at the Imjingak Pavilion in Paju beginning
on March 27. The following events will be held on the fourth Sunday of each
month (on April 24, May 22, September 25, and October 23).
Gyeonggi Province Balanced Development Planning Assistant
Governor Yoon Byeong-jib said, “This
year’s DMZ bicycle tours will be
undertaken in collaboration with DMZ-related events, and the province will identify
ways in which to diversify its operation such as promotion and marketing
methods. By doing so, the province plans to run the tour with more things to
see and enjoy.” Assistant Governor Yoon
added, “We will help the tour become
an iconic tourism course in Korea by continuing to add amenities and improve
the Pyeonghwanurigil project.”
The DMZ bicycle tour is the only event in Korea through
which people can tour the DMZ on bicycles. The Gyeonggi Provincial Government
and the Gyeonggi Tourism Organization have been operating the project since
2010.
Of particular note, visitors can enjoy the
beautiful environment of Imjingang River and engage in activities near the border.
For those reasons, it is very popular among tourists; 15,000 people took part
in the tour last year alone.
The event features a course that starts at Tongmun
of Imjingak Pavilion, travels through Tongil Bridge, Chopyeongdo Island, and
returns to 64 Tongmun. Participants can choose between an intermediate course
that runs for 17.2 kilometers and a beginner course that runs for 14 kilometers.
Aside from the bicycle tour, people can take part in additional events such as
sending post cards, the DMZ photo exhibition, and viewing the area through
binoculars. All participants will also receive a gift card for agricultural
products worth KRW 5,000 as well as water and snacks.
You can register to participate in the Paju
Imjingak Pavilion DMZ bicycle tour through the Gyeonggi Tourism Portal (http://ggtour.or.kr)
during the application period for the tours each month. The application period runs
from March 7 to 18 for the March event, from April 4 to 15 for the April event,
from May 2 to 13 for the May event, from September 5 to 16 for the September
event, and from October 3 to 14 for the October event. The participation fee is
KRW 10,000 per person. Please note that you also have to pay an additional KRW
3,000 for equipment rental.
Gyeonggi Province also plans to hold a special
bicycle tour in conjunction with the ‘Pyeonghwanurigil
Walking Event’, one of the most iconic DMZ
experience events in Gyeonggi Province, in Yeoncheon and Gimpo apart from Paju
Imjingak Pavilion. Moreover, a DMZtour bicycle rental booth will be set up at
the Imjinmul Saerom Land camp site in Yeoncheon County from March to November.
The province will use this booth to help tourists ride bicycles along the Imjinjeokbyeok-gil,
which is course 11 of the Pyeonghwanurigil.
