The smart classroom project undertaken
by Gyeonggi Province in Mongolia as part of its Official Development Assistance
(ODA) program is kindling local interest in the Korean language.

According to the provincial government,
20 Korean language teachers in 12 schools across Mongolia have established the
Korean Teachers Association in Mongolia and hosted an
inauguration ceremony on March 12 at Chingeltei Model School No. 23. That venue
was the first school for secondary education in Mongolia to open a Korean
language class.

Of particular note, this association
was established voluntarily by Korean language teachers in Mongolia. Among the
12 schools represented by the teachers in the association, 10 already have
smart classrooms supported by Gyeonggi Province.

Gyeonggi Province began
supporting the establishment of smart classrooms from December 2014 to spread
the Korean language in Mongolia. These classrooms have become a sensation
because students can learn the Korean language by communicating with teachers
using ICT devices such as electronic black boards and tablets in the classrooms.

Korean Teachers Association in Mongolia
President Ertembataar offered his appraisal, saying,
The smart classrooms
provided by Gyeonggi Province not only enhance ICT usage capabilities among our
primary, middle, and high school students, they also affect the way classes are
taught in Mongolia, going from simplistic cram instruction to a form based on
mutual communication.

Kwon Oh-seok, a Korean
language teacher in Mongolia and a member of the association, said,
Problems with the standardization
of Korean instruction in Mongolia, and the need to learn teaching methods and
contents that were difficult to address with a consortium of a few schools, now
have a solution thanks to this project by Gyeonggi Province.
Kwon also explained, Meetings between Korean
language teachers have become more active.

The Korean Teachers Association in Mongolia
plans to actualize plans designed in the field of education in Mongolia such as
editing Korean language textbooks and establishing standard Korean curriculum.

With regard to these plans,
Gyeonggi Province is expected to support the development of Korean educational
contents and other capacity-building activities. Moreover, it will expand the scope
of this project and build smart classrooms in the second and third largest
cities of Mongolia, Darkhan and Erdenet, respectively, as well as in Ulaanbaatar
in cooperation with the Mongolian Ministry of Education.

Gyeonggi
Province
s Foreign Policy Division Director
Kim Kyu-sik said,
We will continue our efforts
to promote Korean language education in Mongolia and help stabilize as well as
improve the sustainability of the smart classroom project.
