Co-hosted by Gyeonggi Province
and the Korean Trade Association, and celebrating its 15th annual
event, G-FAIR Tokyo 2016 took place on April 19 at the Tokyo International
Forum in Chiyoda, Tokyo.
G-FAIR Tokyo is an event that
takes place in mid-April every year to introduce competitive products made by
Korean small and medium corporations to invited Japanese buyers. In the past,
products featuring great ideas such as household safes that targeted Japan’s local
characteristics as well as health foods like ginseng products were popular
thanks to the ‘Hallyu’ (Korean
wave) boom.
This year, G-FAIR Tokyo features
45 companies from Gyeonggi Province including: 27 health and beauty product
manufacturers; 25 companies producing idea products and daily sundries; 16
electrical and electronic product companies; 9 machinery and environmental
companies; and 12 agricultural and fishery producers as well as 89 other
companies from seven municipal governments such as Daegu and Jeollabuk-do.
Given that most of the
products featured in this year’s G-FAIR Tokyo are similar to key
products exported by Gyeonggi Province, and the variety of products feature competitive
ideas that take into account the characteristics of the Japanese market,
Gyeonggi Province expects the total volume of exports to Japan to increase
thanks to the event.
During consultation sessions,
idea products such as non-smell frying pans, personal homecare cosmetics and
beauty devices, smart low-frequency therapeutic devices, and eco-friendly child
toys won the attention of Japanese buyers.
One company insider from
Gyeonggi Province who participated in G-FAIR Tokyo this year as well as the
Japanese trade stimulus group last year said, “As a result of Gyeonggi Province’s efforts to diversify its export portfolio, we met with a Japanese
buyer at an export consultation session in 2015 and were able to sign a
contract worth USD 250,000 or more each year.” He
added, “We’re using G-FAIR as a
great opportunity to manage our key buyers and to find new buyers.”
In his welcoming address, Gyeonggi
Province Social Integration Vice Governor Lee Ki-woo said, “Although
Japan is the fifth largest export market for Gyeonggi Province, our trade
balance shows a deficit of more than USD 8.5 billion each year. Therefore, it’s a market for which we need to improve this trade imbalance with
more conscious efforts.” Vice Governor Lee also
commented, “Quality requirements and other trade
conditions are stringent; however, since we can expect long-term trade once a
deal is struck, Gyeonggi Province will find various ways to help small and
medium companies across the province to help improve the trade deficit with
Japan.”
G-FAIR Tokyo 2016 runs until
April 20.
