Export consultations to help small and medium
enterprises (SMEs) in Gyeonggi Province enter the ASEAN market.
At 10:00am on May 12, Gyeonggi Province hosted
invitational export consultations at the 2016 ASEAN DAY at KINTEX in Goyang
City.
Buyers from more than 100 companies in key ASEAN
countries including Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Indonesia, and Laos (with
significant potential for personal consumption thanks to economic development) as
well as Vietnam (one of Korea’s top
3 export destinations) attended this year’s event.
These buyers engaged in 1-on-1 customized export
consultations with more than 460 SMEs of Gyeonggi Province with potential in
consumer goods, IT, and the electrical/electronic industries that will benefit
from the Korea-ASEAN FTA.
Of particular note, this year’s event aims to help companies expand their operations into regions
with significant potential in the wake of Korea-ASEAN FTA ratification.
Gyeonggi Province sees this as a important opportunity to promote the export
activities of its SMEs and diversify the province’s
export destinations, which currently focus on China and the United States.
Gyeonggi Province Administrative Vice Governor Yang
Bok-wan said, “I hope these consultation sessions
serve as a spark that helps us overcome the current difficulties in our export efforts
because of slowing global trade and sluggishness in new emerging markets.” Vice Governor Yang also said, “We will do
our utmost on multiple fronts to support regions with significant potential
after the signing of the Korea-ASEAN FTA in order to enhance the exporting capacities
of SMEs and diversify our export destinations.”
Participation in this event was free of charge,
with Gyeonggi Province offering: invitations
and consultation arrangements with buyers; interpretation support for 1-on-1
export consultations; and one-stop multi-services including difficulty
resolution in export activities and investments so as facilitate ASEAN market entry
and improve the utility of the event.

Gyeonggi Province enacted an ordinance in June 2009
in order to effectively respond to mega-FTAs such as the Korea-ASEAN FTA that
are promoted simultaneously. The province also establishes comprehensive FTA responses
each year to ensure the FTAs are effectively utilized and that provincial
industries are not adversely affected.
