The central square at the
Northern Gyeonggi Provincial Government Complex is set to become a place of
rest and culture.
On June 23, the provincial government announced that it plans to remodel the
central square in front of its northern complex and open it to the public by
December 2017. This KRW 19.9 billion project will cover a total of 33,310㎡ including the current northern complex site and the parking lot
behind the complex (7,250㎡) as well as the site across from
the complex (12,715㎡).
The provincial government expects
to finalize the blueprints and begin construction next year. The remodeling will
be completed by December 2017. At present, the government is undertaking
necessary administrative procedures including deliberation for use of public
property.
With regards to the remodeling
of the square at the northern complex, Gyeonggi Provincial Assembly Security &
Public Committee Chair Yoon Yeong-chang said, “Many people including Uijeongbu residents
visit the northern provincial government complex to file civil complaints on weekdays.
However, the northern office is not utilized as much during weekends and public
holidays.” Yoon agreed with the necessity for the
remodeling project, saying, “This project aims to help
Gyeonggi residents use the central square in front of our northern complex,
which is public property, for cultural purposes and as a form of public
economy.”
According to project plans,
the 9,500㎡ square in front of the northern complex will feature a sunken pond,
ice skating rink, a multi-tiered waterfall, and resting spaces.
Meanwhile, the site across from
the northern complex will become a ‘Culture Forest’ featuring a lawn plaza, puzzle park, performance stage, and apple
blossom forest. An overpass will be installed to ensure safe passage between
the square in front of the northern complex and the Culture Forest.
The parking lot behind the northern
complex will be transformed into a ‘Nature Forest Park’ with wooden ramps and temporary structures.
According to the provincial government,
once the square at the northern complex opens, the walkway from Chudong
neighborhood park behind the northern complex – which continues on to the
landscape square at Uijeongbu City and Buyongcheon will complete a 500m-long urban
resting axis. This is expected to become one of the most significant
attractions in northern Gyeonggi.
An official with the Gyeonggi
Provincial Government said, “The northern complex square will become
a great place for Gyeonggi residents to enjoy a wide range of cultural
activities and a resting place within the city.” The
official added, “It will become an urban landmark as
popular as the square to be built in front of the new government complex in
Gwanggyo. Gyeonggi Province plans to dedicate the square to the 3.35 million
residents in northern Gyeonggi who have access to fewer green areas within their
cities compared to residents in southern Gyeonggi.”
