Germany’s largest
family business and the no. 2 precious metals processing corporation in the
world, Hereaus, opened its integrated Korean headquarters at the Gwanggyo
Business Center in Suwon.
Gyeonggi Province’s Investment Promotion
Division Deputy Director for Europe Lee Min-woo, Heraeus Electronics President
Dr. Frank Stietz, Heraeus New Businesses President Dr. Ralf Droste, Korean-German
Chamber of Commerce and Industry Secretary General Barbara Zollman and Hereaus
Korea CEO Chang Seong-kyu participated in the opening ceremony that took place on
the morning of June 30
With 12,500 employees and EUR
12.9 billion in annual sales (approximately KRW 17 trillion), Hereaus is the
world’s largest family business in precious metals trading, special
processing and manufacturing. Hereaus entered the Korean market in 1980 and has
now established an integrated headquarters at the Gwanggyo Business Center in
Suwon to consolidate its operations and research center in Korea located in
Hwaseong, Ansan, and Incheon.
Representatives of Gyeonggi
Province have visited the headquarters of Hereaus since 2014 to secure its
investment as part of the provincial strategy to attract hidden champions of Europe.
An official with Gyeonggi
Province said, “With Hereaus announcing its Vision 2020 focusing on three keywords – Korea, automobiles, and
displays – in
2015, it has pursued more significant investments in Korea.” The
official explained, “The launch of an integrated
headquarters is part of its Vision 2020, and this represents a significant alliance
opportunity.”
The official continued, “With
European corporations expected to take a conservative stance on investments
after Brexit, we expect the new integrated headquarters of Hereaus, a hidden
champion of Germany, to help us attract more investments into Gyeonggi Province
from European corporations.”
On the same day as the
ceremony, Gyeonggi Province proposed the provision of patents owned by Hereaus
to startups in Gyeonggi Province as well as matching support with small and
medium enterprises in new industry sectors of Hereaus (such as lithium-ion
batteries, metal ingredients for 3D printing, and more) to Hereaus Korea.
Gyeonggi Province plans to
provide startups in Gyeonggi Province with patents owned by Hereaus and develop
them as technologies that can be commercialized. The provincial government believes
that if startups in Gyeonggi Province can commercialize the patented technologies
of Hereaus, they can use overseas sales networks in cooperation with the global
networks of Hereaus, while Hereaus can share mutual profits through the provision
of its patented technology.
The German corporation Hereaus
is the third hidden champion from Europe to establish operations in Gyeonggi
Province after Plansee of Austria and Technoprobe of Italy.
